The reader may make up his mind to be pleasantly overwhelmed by the opulence and vivacity of “Around the Fan” published by the Nutshell Publishing Company, 1059 Third Ave nue, New Tork. The wonders begin with the frontispiece picture of Presi dent McKinley, drawn in a single line beginnlog at a point on tbecheek bone and going round and round in a constantly widening circle, with waverings and downbearings of the pen in the proper places to secure de tachment and shading. We are told that this portrait is considered the most unique work of the kind in the world, and if there are degrees of uniqueness we are willing to believe that this is meat the thing of which there are no duplicates. Of course there is a text in addition to the pic tures, and we should be surprised in deed to bear from any purchaser the opinion that he had not got his money’s worth (#2 00).—N. Y. Gold Hill. Jacksonville, Or., WANTED« The Richmond Time« does not know “where It In at,” aaya th« Atlanta Con- stltntlon. It is so badly befogged that It believe« “nobody knows how the Democratic party stands on tbe great questions of tbe day” and that “thou- vands of men do not know whether they belong to the Democratic party or not.” But perhaps things are not actually Ln so bad a way as all that We have the authority of Longfellow, in fact that sometime« “things are not as they seem" and us they nuist undoulitedly seem to Demacrats who have been straying from the procession and pot- luckiug with the opposition for tbe past live years. Everything is apt to seem out of place to the fellow who is off his base himself. The Times might easily help itself back to right relations with tbe party by frankly considering a few simple and significant facts. “The great ques tions of the day,” to employ its phrase, are the proposals and purposes of the dominant Republican party. Its poli cies as, they are being exploited by the administration and tbe majority of con gress furnish tbe live issues of the day and prophesy tbe salients of the next campaign. No man who believes in the constitu tion as It was interpreted by its mak ers and by the popular voice for the first hundred years of our history can doubt that he is a Democrat No men who believes that wherever the flag floats the great doctrines of tbe consti- tion should be applied and enforced can doubt to which party he belongs. No man who is opposed to a fixed colo nial system, to far foreign possessions and [»copie in vassalage, can hesitate about proclaiming himself a Democrat. No ma:i who Iciicvt s in the fundamen tal u./oms uf Democracy ns declared by Jeff* rson and who opixises imperi- ilisni. militarism, trust control of leg islation or coi pon te control of govern mental functions can be other than a I»em x-rnt. Some Celebrated Men Who Married Their Domestic Servants. Many celebrated men have married their domestic servants. Sir Henry Parkes, premier of New South Wales, Is an example. One night when dining at a friend’s bouse he was struck by the appearance of a servant girl who watted upon the table and persuaded his host to allow her to enter his em ploy. This she did and for a abort time held the position of cook in Sir Henry** household. Then he made her Lady Parke«. But more Illustrious than this is tbe case of Peter the Great One day he was dining at tbe house of Prince Men- shikoff. He noticed one of the servant maids particularly, and, though she was uot handsome, she caught his fan-, cy. Her name, the prince told tbe czar.l was Martha. She had been a servant In the house of a Lutheran minister of1 Marienbnrg, and when that city was! captured by tbe troops oi Russia she| bad been taken prisoner by General; Bauer, who bad passed her over to tbe prince, whose servant she was. The count politely made a present of her to tbe «ar. who eventually married her. William Cobbett. tbe great writer, when be was only twenty-one years of age one morning chanced to see a bux om servant girl busily engaged in washing tbe family linen. Tbe girl was pretty, so Cobbett spoke to her, learned her name and the same even ing called apon her parents and said be would like to marry their daughter. Tbe parents of the girl Informed the young man that they had no objections to him as their son-in-law, but that be would have to wait until their daugh ter was of a marriageable age. Five years later Cobbett, true to bis early love, married her. Barnum’s Monkoys “All well—all happy—lota of fun”.
