Counsel for Miss Portia Knight have
written a letter to the papers denying
the statement purported to have
been made by the Duke of Manchester
to th«; effect that he considered the
action to have been unjustified, and
that he believed it had been dropped.
According to counsel the breach of
promise suit is proceeding, and the
courts will decide whether it is justi­
fied or not.
Those elected as officials of the
town at the late election were sworn
in Friday night. T. J. Kenney and
H. G. Dox, who were elected trustee
and recorder respectively, are the only
new members of the present adminis­
tration. The board of trustees or­
ganized with the election of Emil
Britt as president, a position he has
well and acceptably tilled for several
terms.
Ata business meeting of the Rogue
River Choral Union, held at Grant’s
Pass, an executive committee was ap­
pointed, which, among other things,
has authority to elect officers and ap­
point a time and place for holding the
next convention. It consists of Es­
ther Sllsby and Fred Nell of Ashland,
H. C. Kinney and T. P. Cramer of
Grant'll Pass, Mrs. F. M. Love of Jack­
sonville, II. L. Gilkey and Mrs. W. I.
Vawter of Medford.
J. B. Phelps of Woodville went to
Grant’s Pass one day last week, to
stay until next morning. He retired
at the Palace Hotel in bis usual state
of health, but was found dead in bed
the next day, presumably having died
of heart disease. Mr. Phelps was for
a long time a prominent citizen of
Lake county, coming to this section a
number of years ago. He was one of
the oldest members of the Masonle fra­
ternity In the state and had many
friends.

The new law In reference to taking
up estrays needs to be studied, as
there Is a provision for a tine of #10 to
•KM) to taking up an estray without
complying with the provisions of the
act. When an estray is taken up
three notices have to tie posted. It is
provided though that no estrays shall
be taken up during the months from
May to November, inclusive, except
breachy or vicious animals, which
may be taken up In any month. With­
in ten days the owner may claim and
secure the animal upon the payment
of 81 fee and a reasonable price for
keeping it. After ten days the coun­
ty clerk is notified, and the animal is
appraised and sold, being advertised
in a newspaper If over 815 in value.

tunity to exhibit their skill as pencil
artists. The serving of elegant refresh­
ments was a pleasing finale.
