Remarkable Cares of Rheumatism.
From the Vindicator, Rutherfordton, N. C.
Theeditorof the Vindicator has had
occasion to test the efficacy of Cham-
berliin’s Pain Balm twice with the
most remarkable results in each case.
First, with rheumatism in the shoul
der, from which he suffered excruciat
ing pain for ten days, which was re
lieved with two applications of the
Pain Balm, rubbing the parts afflicted
and realizing instant benefit and en
tire relief in a very short time. Sec

When the theater crowd was at its
thickest on Broadway on Saturday
night, a well set up man of medium
size, wearing a glossy silk hat, hurried
along. In dodging through the throng
the handle of the cane he carried
caught the arm of one of two burly
persons who were going in the same
direction. He half turned as If to apol
ogize. but before he could do so one
of the pair smashed his silk hat with a
heavy stick.
“I i>eg your pardon, sir.” said the
man, blandly taking off ills battered
tile. "My rudeness was unintention
al.”
Putting back the damaged hat on his
head, he dropped liis cane and said,
"Now I propose to settle with you for
a blackguard.”
Those on the spot saw a flash of
fists. The big man went fiat on bls
bui k from a clean smash on the jaw.
"If you want any more. I am ready
ro oblige you." said tbo other.
The other apparently didn't. The
»mailer man picked up his stick, took
off tiis damaged »¡Ik hat. brushed it
ami continued on his way down Broad
way. And tlie crowd of spectators,
who had gathered as if by magic, broke
up with the feeling that they had seen
as uent a bit of work as it would ever
be their good fortune to encounter.—

Is especially true of New York. Toe
New York Tribune mentions some pe
culiar signs and relates the following:
A Londoner who had strolled about
the streets of the city with a New
Yorker who called his attention to
some of the signs of son* agreed that
in this respect New York was very like
London, but In neither city was there
any such sign as be saw In one of the
old English town* a few hours’ run
from the world’s metropolis. The sign
reuJz, “John Littlejohn’s Sons A Little
(Little Littlejohn, Doolittle Littlejohn
A John Little).
According to the Londoner the first
Littlejohn and Little were partners.
The former gave bis first son his part
ner’s family name, and Little gave his
boy his partaer’s Christian name. Lit
tlejohn’s second son was named for his
mother’s family,' Doolittle. The three
sons succeeded to their fathers' busi
ness; hence the sign Is entirely correct,
and the Txmdoner was right In saying
that the successors had no Intention of
being "funny” when they had their
sign written as It appears.
THE TRANSVAAL WAR.
P retoria , March 17.—The pros
pects of peace are still consicfered
hopeful. The Boer loss last month
were 100 killed, 400 wounded and 1000
captured or surrendered. Owing to
the heavy rains Gea. Frencli** trans
port difficulties are still enormous.
Gen. DeWet’s commando has been
broken up at Senekal, Orange River
Colony.
Lord Roberts, in a letter to a corre
spondent, expresses a confident hope
that Lord Kitchener will soon be able
to secure peace in South Africa, but
tbuslar there is no sign from Pre
toria or Cape Town that peace is near.
The latest Dews is that Gen. Fourie,
with 800 men, escaped Sunday from
the British columns that were trying
to corner the commando, east of
Bloemfontein. Further big opera
tions will be started in the Orange
River colony within a few days.

SALT
LAKE
CITY.
AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN TRANSCON
TINENTAL TRAVEL.
No one crossing the continent can z
afford to cut Salt Lake City from bls
route. The attractions of the place,
including the Mormon temple, taber
nacle and church institutions, the
Great Salt Lake—deader and denser
than the Dead sea in the holy land—
ths picturesque environment and the
warm sulphur and hot springs, are
are greater to the square yard than
any locality on the American conti
nent. The Rio Grande Western Rail
way, cod necting on the east with the
Denver
Rio Grande and Colorado
Midland Railways and on the west
with the Southern Pacific (central
route) and Oregon Short Line, is the
only transcontinental line passing di
rectly through Salt Lake City. The
route through Salt Lake City is fa
mous all the year round. On account
of the equable climate of Utah and
Colorado it is just as popular in win
ter as in summer. Send two cents to
J. D. Mansfield, 253 Washington St.,
Portland, or to Geo. W. Heintz, Gen
eral Passenger Agent, Sait Lake City,

Rheumatism.
Nobody knows all about it;
and nothing, now known, will

Doctors try Scott’s Emul

they think it is caused by im

food.
You can do the same.
It may or may not be caused
by the failure of stomach and
bowels to do their work.
If
it is, you will cure it; if not,
you will do no harm.
The way, to cure a disease
is to stop its cause, and help
the body get back to its habit

When Scott’s Emulsion of

cures; when it don’t, it don’t
