Supposing a woodchopper in the Maine forest is told to get out a mast for a yacht He knows that be must find a tree which Is straight for 60 feet below the branches. It would be very troublesome to climb trees and measure them with a tape measure, so be, without knowing it, uses prac tical trigonometry. He measures off 50 feet in a straight line from the tree, and then be cuts a pole, which, when upright In the ground, is exactly as tall as himself. This be plants In the earth his own length from the end of his 60 feet. For example, if he Is six feet tall, he plants his six foot pole 54 feet from the tree. Then he lies down on his back, with his bead at the end of the line and bls feet touching the pole, and sights over the top of It He knows that where his eyes touch the tree is almost exactly 60 feet from the ground.—Weekly Bouquet NUN AN’S I JACKSONVILLE. That’s a pathetic story of the Gour- don fishing boat crew. No class of men face death more frequently than the hardy fisher tollers of the sea, and among none Is a genuine heroism more frequently displayed. The Gourdon boat was manned by a father and Ills four sons. When the boat sank, three of the latter went with her. The old man got an oar, and soon the fourth son appeared by his side. But the oar could only support one, and the lad, taking In the situa tion at once, bade his parent farewell in the words, “Weel, week faither, I maun jlst awa’,” and sank. Only readers familiar with the north ern dialect will fully appreciate the depth of kindly resignation and true feeling which the words denote. The father endured terrible sufferings, but was ultimately picked up. “Greater love bath no man than this.”—West minster Gazette. ATTORNEYS AND COUNSELORS AT LAW Jacksonville, Oregon. An exceedingly well dressed woman sat in an elevated railway car the oth er day, and opi*osjte her was an elderly man. The woman got up to leave the car, and in the corner of the seat where she had been sitting the man spied a piece of black net. Jumping for It, he called out: “Madam, you have left your veil!” As she took no notice of him he dashed down the aisle after her, and, touching her on the elbow again, said: “Madam, you have left your veil,” kt the same time holding it up in full view of all. It was a frowsy, frayed, torn piece of black cotton net. “It is not mine, sir!” she snapped out, giving him a withering look, and the obliging old man shrank back as if be had been jabbed with a hatpin, while the passengers grinned. “Why was she so mad about it?” he asked in a dazed way as he laid the homely little rag on the window sill. “I guess you never paid for a wo- man’s finery,” said another man. “That’s so,” said the withered one In a hopeless tone. “I am a bachelor. Perhaps I’d know more if I’d mar ried.” “You would that,” said the other feelingly.—New York Tribune. 1 Renting tlie Muscles. • Are the Leading Dealers in Gent’s Furnishing Goods, Hats, Boo One of the most beautiful natural arms and legs and yawns. Ask your physician this ques tion, "What is the one great remedy for consumption?” He will answer, "Cod-liver oil.” Nine out of ten will answer the same way. Yet when persons have consumption they loathe all fatty foods, yet fat is neces sary for their recovery and they cannot take plain cod liver oil. The plain oil dis turbs the stomach and takes away the appetite. The dis agreeable fishy odor and tastg make it almost unen durable. What is to be done? This question was ans wered when we first made SCOTT'S EMULSION of Cod-Liver Oil with Hypo phosphites. Although that was nearly twenty-five yean ago, yet it stands alone to day the one great remedy for all affections of the throat and lungs. The baa taste and odor have been taken away, the oil itself has been partly di jested, and the most sen sitive stomach objects to it rarely. Fish yawn; they open their mouths slowly until they are round, the bones of the head seem to loosen, and the gills open. Dogs are inveterate yawners and stretchers, but seldom sneeze unless they have a cold. Cats are always stretching their bodies, legs and claws, as every one knows who has a cat for a pet Horses stretch violently when and after indulging in a roll, but not, as a rule, on all fours. A stag when stretching sticks out his head, stretches his fore ^eet out and hollows his back and neck as though trying to creep under a bar. Most ruminant animals stretch when they rise up after lying down. Deer do it regularly; so do cows. This fact is so well known that If a cow, when arising from lying down, does not stretch herself it is a sign she is ill. The reason for this is plain—the stretch moves every muscle of the body, and If there be any injury any where It hurts.—Pittsburg Dispatch. Tne special expert sent aoroau oy the agricultural department in search of new seeds and edible plants lias brought back an “ever bearing straw- berry.” It is said to produce fruit for months on the same plants, and. a small patch will supply a family table a whole season. * People marvel at the mechanism of the human body, with its 492 bones end 60 arteries. But man Is simple In this respect compared with the carp. That remarkable fish moves no fewer than 4,386 bones and muscles every time it breathes. It has 4,320 veins, to say nothing of its 09 muscles. The statistician of the department of agriculture has made public his fiscal estimates of ,the acreage, pro duction and value of the crops of 1899. The values are based on the average farm prices on December 1st, in accordance with the practice of the department. The wheat acreage was 44,592,416, the production 347,303,- 846 bushels, and the value $219,545,- 259, the average yield per sere being 12.3 bushels, and the average farm price per bushel on December 1st o8.4 cents. The apologists for the attempted destruction of the brave and strug gling Transvaal republic try to justi fy Great Britain's cause In ¡South Africa by saying that the Boers have made taxation of the outlanders op pressive, obtaining the bulk of taxes raised in the country from the mines owned by the foreigners. Figures which do not misrepresent the facts in the case entirely disprove these flimsy excuses. The product or the Transvaal mines is taxed 2A per cent. Great Britain exacts a 10 per cent, tax on the output of the Klondike mines, which American capital and energy have developed; besides other grossly exacting and oppressive measures, those who are not Cana dians or British subjects are com pelled to submit to under the mining and general laws ol the dominion. Yet no person would attempt to jus tify our right to dictate law in the Klondike region, or assert that the United Sta es wtuld attain a high degree of saintliness were she to at tempt to seize Canada. .irniation of the Heart. -4 A severe attack of nervous prostration left my heart in a very weak state.
