An Illustrious Pupil, It was in 1859, when he was embas sador at St. Petersburg, that Prince Bis marck studied Russiau. The suspicious ex-ohaneellor, who once declared that blotting paper was “an invention of the enemy,” wisliod to dispense with inter preters. Ho engaged a young law stu dent to give him lessons. M. Alexeleoff has lately fu-^iished somo particulars of his former pupil. The pronunciation of certain syllables was a prent difficulty, and Bismarck got out of temper more than once, but he finally mastered the language well euougli for his purpose, and then disput ed the remuneration which bad been agreed upon. Bismarck carefully kept his knowl edge of Rnssiau a secret from the court with the result that he occasionally gleaned information not intended for him, but on one occasion the czar, who was talking in Russian to Prince Gort- sliakoff, noticed that the embassador was looking very fixedly ut him, and at once guessed the truth. He asked Bismarck, poiut blank, if he understood Russiau, and the “man of blood and iron” con fessed, much auuoyed at having been found out.—Pearson’s Weekly. DISPOSING OF FARM CROPS. When to Sell and When to Hold—Opla. lone Expressed by Prairie Farmer. The outer door to the office building was a massive affair that swung either way. The man who entered was in a hurry, but ho considerately looked behind him to see that he did not let it swing in the face of any one who might be following. The woman who was following seem ed to be paying no attention to the door, so tbe man held it open for her to enter. The thought that occurred to' the woman just as she got in the doorway appeared to make her doubtful as to whether she wished to go in or out. The man still held the door open. The woman said, “I wonder if I have the paper that he told me to bring to his office,” and began to search through the little bag that she carried in her hand. The man said—well, never mind what the man said. He still held the door open in order to prevent it sweep ing the woman into the street The woman found the paper she wee aftor and looked across the street, as if uncertain whether she had the right ad dress. The man said, “Pardon me, madam, but I am in a hurry. ” The woman said, “Sir!" The man said, “I cannot remain here and hold this door any longer. ” The womau said, “Sir, you are the most insulting man I ever met!" The man swore softly to himself, the woman entered, and the door swung back with great force. The woman looked scornfully at the man and said something about tailing her husband bow she had been insulted. The man made no reply, but later he was heard saying to himself, “And yet people claim that it pays to be polite.” —Chicago Post.
