Oct 26 —The Jackson county Sunday-school convention has been in session in this city for the past two days and was well attended, every Sunday-school in the county being repre sented. Much interest was manifested in the work. At to-day's meeting several papers were read, among them being “Our Relation to the State and Nation,” by the Rev. W. B. Moore, of Jacksonville, and ‘Next Sunday’s Lesson,” by J. R. Erford, of Medford. “Normal Work,” was the subject presented by G. F. Billings, of Ashland, and was illustrated in a clear manner. Among the prominent visitors were the Rev. S. S. Caldwell, Presbyterian Sunday-school missionary, and F. T. Downing, of the American School Union, who spoke highly of the interest shown by the people of Jackson county in the great work, and also reported much success in the respective lines. The annual election of officers took place to-day, with the fol lowing result: President, Rev. F. G. Strange, of Ashland; vice-presidents, Mrs. E. P. Childs, Mrs. A. A. Kellogg and Mrs. Charles Foster; secretary, Mrs. W. J. Plymale; treasurer, Mrs. G. H. Haskins. T he convention will close with this evening’s session, to meet at Central Point October 1 and 2, 1895. A vote of thanks was extended the citizens of Med ford for the kind treatment shown the large number of delegates present, The report of the secretary for the past year showed a total of 33 Sunday schools, with a membership of 2200, in Jackson county. I n August, 1890, just before the McKin ley law went into effect, wheat sold in the Chicago market foi $1.08*4. Os an equal footing, the American farmer need have no fear of competition in the “home market.” It is the restric tion ot the foreign market, in which the prices of farm products are fixed, th_t he has to fear. The “home market” can quickly become glutted from an over sup ply, but the world's markets are practically limitless. America should not only feed her self, but should feed most of Europe as well, and would be doing so to-day had it not been for the outrageous policy of the Re publican party, that has persistently dis couraged foreign nations sending their ship» to our ports. JOSEPHINE COUNTY ITEMS. WÍ Sip B ( P G very air address A FEW PERTINENT QUESTIONS. T imes P rinting C ompany , Care of the Editor:— Will you please answer the follow ing questions for a constant reader of your valuable paper. You may labor under a mistake in looking for my name on your subscription list if I do not tell you that 1 am not a regular subscriber, but borrow the paper or rather exchange with my neighbor. I take the Topeka Blow-hard, a red-hot dollar paper. Of course, all you care for is to know that your paper is being read. As to the questions, if any of them are too deep for you, pass by them but be sure to print the article just as it's writ, excepting to correct the wrong words and grammarize the mistakes in the use of language, so that others having the de sired knowledge will have a chance to “show off.” What would be a safe bet on California this fall? Is D. B. Hill a Cleveland Democrat? Is Grover Clevc- land a Hill Democrat? Does whiskv kill, and do the Democrats drink all the liquor distilled? It so, why have uot the Democratic majorities been greatly reduced by free liquor? What has become of the “Jacksonville Ring?” What are the Populist county officials doing with the skeletons they found in the closet? flow much will be saved to the taxpayers by their “system of economy?” Now to illustrate what I want to get at, I will slate a case. I don’t own any real-estate, but if I should buy or trade for a water front lot in Fiddlebuty's addition to Bloody Point, wou'd my taxes be much less than they were last year? If less, how much so, and who would lose lhe difference? 1 have a chant i to trade a shotgun for one of those lots. Do you think it advisable for me to trade? I would then become a regular taxpayer, would I not? I could then with better grace m»ke a roar about public extravagance, I suppose; Which one of the county offices is being conduct ed at a loss to the holder at present? Which of the county officials have free passes on the railroad, and what is the legal allow ance to each one for mileage? Is my pen manship good enough for ordinary busi ness? Some of my friends want me to run for county judge two years hence. I don't want the office, but if it’s forced upon me I’ll take it. I see there is another fellow puckering his mou;h for that plum; but he can't be elected and it will be a drag on tbe party that nominates him; don’t you think so? This may seem to you like “Two grains of wheat in two bushels of chaff, Not worth the winnowing by hall.” However, if you will look closely you may discover the grain. C onstant R eader .
