causing instant death. Williamson had
said that Burr had visited his home dur
ing his absence. Both were young nteu.
There is great excitement about the jail
where Burr is confined, and threats of
mob violence are heard.
James and George Lipp, aged 19 and
17 years respectively, were terribly muti
lated by the explosion of a box of giant
powder caps which they found near the
roadside at the mines near Mokelumne
Hill, Cal. It is thought that a cigarette
spark fell among the caps while they
were examining them.
Hosea L. Stone and Virgin Moon,
young farmers near Waco, Tex., at
tended a country dance the other night
and became involved in a dispute. Moon
accused Stone of misrepresenting him to
a young woman to whom both were
paying attentions. The men withdrew
to a lane and engaged in a duel with
knives. Moon was cut and stabbed sev
eral times and died shortly afterward.
Stone, uauly wounded, made his escape.
Miss Mary Leper, who is credited as
being the first woman in New Jersey to
adopt the divided skirts as part of her
regular attire, was the victim of an at
tempted assault recently. Laurant Mil
ton, a young Frenchman, son of a rich
family, is charged with the crime. Miss
Leper is known all over the country.
She lives about a mile from Hacken
sack. Her costume at all times con
sisted of a pair of boots or shoes, as oc
casion requires, the divided skirts and a
short jacket and masculine hat. Miss
Leper has had considerable trouble over
her radical notions about dress. She has
been driven from the churches because
•he persisted in wearing the unconven
tional garments to the services. The
story told by Miss Leper was that she
called at the Milton home. There was
ho one at home but the son Laurant.
She said she did not know this, and en
tered the house as usual. In the assault
which followed Miss Leper made a
“manly” fight against her assailant.
She finally knocked the young man
lown. Her dress was torn in the strug
gle. She got out of the room while Mil
din lay on the floor.
