There is on I v one vacant residence in

that is not a very desirable place—it is
the county jail.

» ; ».>«* t«» very interest
ing gossip occasionally, tig.ires in a quaint
little story that is at pn.ient going the
rounds.
.A short time ago she was entertaining
at supper a lady of her m «¡u.dntance, when
it chanced that there was ¡»laced upon the
table a small pot of chodolale. Tlie hostess
of the occasion was very fond of the bever
age in question, partaking of it every even
ing of her life. Unfortunately the servant
had neglected to make more than the usual
quantity, which was just about sufficient
fur a single cup.
Accordingly, when the guest was askud
if she would have some, she hesitated a
moment and said no
Whereupon her eu-
tertainer flushed with anger at the con
tretemps and, rising from her 6eat, deliber
ately pourod the contents of the chocolate
pot out of the window.
This was embarrassing for the lady eu
tertaiued, to say the least of It. Of course,
however, she pretende«l to take no notice,
merely glancing slyly at her host, who
made the third person at the repast, to ?ee
if he evinced any consciousness respecting
the proceeding But be only smiled slight
ly beneath his mustache and made no re
mark.
Presently he asked her If she would have
some chicken salad, of which a big dishful
made the principal feature among the
viands.
“I th ink you, no,” she replied, merely
liecHUbe she had a preference for something
else.
Immediately, as if it were quite a matter
• f course, the ho>t picked up the chicken
salad aud threw it, dish and all, out through
the window into the garden.
“It’s a way we have here,” lie remarked,
calmly.
Nobody said anything for quite five min
utes afte rward, but the extreme amiability
exhibited by the hostess for the rest of the
evening led the visitor to imagine that the
lesson thus given after the mauner of Pe
truchio was not without a ce! tain domestic
usefulness. — Washington Post

go to the club and sit down; that
sort of thing ni-«kes me awfully tired.”
The man criticised was conspicuous, and
it was ail be< ause he hadn't sufficient
knowledge of culchaw and depawtuient.
He was fnultleH?*iy dressed, but that didn't
save hint. Whether to take soup from the
side or from the end of a spoon is a mat
ter of culture, but whether to carry the
gloves with the fingers forward or with the
fingers back is a matter of culchaw
Everyb, wly that Is anybody knows all
about culture and deportment, but cul
chaw and depawtuient include the little
niceties of manner and conduct about
which many people have a great deal to
learn
Without culchaw and depawtment
It is impossible to be a swell
THE WALK
A swell must walk at times, no matter
how many broughams and horses he may
have, and it is no more than proper to give
the walk precedence. Thu walk is an ac
quirement a man gets very early in life,
but he never begins to walk in the ¡»roper
way until he is proposed for meinliership
in a good club. This is the way: Legs
stiff, no elasticity; body well forward, no
elasticity; head well back, no elasticity,
and steps about two and a half feet long.
Of course there are variations. Going to
a funeral the manab<»ut town should walk
briskly and as if he enjoyed it. Thereby
he demonstrates his perfect repose of man
ner and shows that it is not influenced by
mere external circumstances. Going to a
wedding he should walk slowly and look
lM»red aud thoroughly convinced that mar
riage is a failure.
In entering a ballroom the walk may be
elaborated to almost any extent. A man
should wear his evening walk just as he
w«‘ars his evening clothes, for the occasion.
Then there are variations of the walk
aside from those of formality and stiffness.
Tlie most noticeable of these is that em
ployed when the expert walker walks with
a “gel.” When thus agreeably employed
he should invariably face her «nd walk
sideways like a crab. This will at first l»e
found rather «lfflic ilt, but practice makes
p«»rfect, and the “gel” who will not put up
with tiring strp{»ed on a few times and
bumped with a p ur of unaccustomed knees
a few times has not a proper appreciation
of culchaw and «lepawtmerit. In walking
with tlie “gel” the student should care
fully avoid keeping step. The step to
gether is for common soldiers, convicts,
« lurk', going t«»gethrr to business and cads
who di regard cidchaw and depawtment.
(¡ent ¡emeu never walk in step
It shows
!«>«> much ¡»nun« «!.ration and thought, and
is n t in keeping with the mental idleness
which should characterize a gentlemen.

Snaking hands is much less a part of
culchaw and depaw tmeut than it once was
It is too much worn. Men don’t do it very
much, and as a rule when an acquaintance
offers to shake bauds it is quits» proper not
tu see his hand and to merely bow
If It
.s an undesirable ac ¡uaintance, look at his
hand as though tht-re whs some doubt
about its cleanliness or as though bls
gloves were not in guoil taste, and then de
liver the stony stare aud short bow
It is
Mimetimes necessary to shake hands. For
instance, a prospective father in law may
be an old timer aud used to shaking hands.
If he is tu l»e humored it shoultl be done
daintily
The hand should be presented
on a level with his nj»per shirt stud, and
the motion of the shake should be straight
up and down.
Fewer well dressed aud culchawed men
carry walking sticks now than formerly.
If a stick is carried it should not be walked
with. It should be light, but should im
press the people that it Is heavy, aud that
the man of culchaw is tired of carrying It.
It should hang head down and back prefer
ably in the left hand
The gloves should
always be carried with the fingers forw ard.
The few rudiments of culchaw and de
pawtment here given may seem trivial to
the uninitiated, but they are in reality im
portant and wholesome. They have helped
men into society. They have also got men
laugbetl at aud disliked, but this is be
lieved only by those ignorant persons who
are envious because they have no knowl
edge of culchaw and depawtmeut.—New

REDLAND -I- NURSERY,
Language of Birds.
Those who are foud of watching our
common birds are familiar with their lan
guage or notes. The song of the bird has
Its meaning in birddom, and who could fail
to understand the various notes of the
mother Linl as she teaches the little ones
to fly or tempts them from the neat? All
birds do not have the range of language
seen in our domestic fowl, yet those which
do not talk and sing oftentimes have many
remarkable ways of expressing themselves.
