What is Needed.
H. E. Hayes, nisaterof tbe Oregon State
Grange thus expressed bis views upon tbe
existing depression in agricultural pursuits :
The great need of farmers in this state is a
thorough knowledge of their business.
To know how to plow, sow and harvest
their crops 1» important but not all. The
market should be studied and they should
learn not to »ell their crops until they are
raised
Many sold their hops last spring
to be delivered this fall at 11 to 15c per lb,
sn«l bow they are worth 40c. The finan
cial qutatiou ia another that mint ba stud
ied. Money can be borrowed in lhe east
at from 4 to ti per cent., while it is loaned
here at 10 to 30 per cent. No farmer can
live and pay such rates ol Interest ;still con
gress is afraid lo give us free coinage of sil
ver for fear ibe treasury may be made a
dumping place for the silver mines and
the people will have loo many silver dollars.
If silver coin is pai«l lor silver ore, the
treasury cannot have too many mines
dumped into it and the people of this state
can take care of all tne silver dollars they
get. Another and greater need for the far
mers is uulted |>o:itical action and they
must secure that lo get at the root of »o
