D aley . int Or., .1 uly 7, 1890. THE TII URATES El) FAMINE IRELAND. There is no longer any doubt of the failure of the potato crop throughout a very large part of Ireland, including al- most the whole of the poorest sections of the country along the west coast from Donegal to Cork. In the first-named county, as well as in the mountainous parts of Armagh and Down, the fa lure is absolute, and the same is the case throiicbout the northern half of .Mayo, all Connemara and the gr. ater part of Galway, ( oik, Limerick and tho islands along the western coast. In Clonakilty, in county Cork, tlie medical officer of the Poor Law Guardians estimates that 300D persons out of 8000 in the district will lie absolutely without f«x»d by the begin ning of October. In Acbilli island, h pop- ul.ition of 40») is nearly in the same con dition, and an outbreak of famine fever is officially reported from the Hlasket islands, immediately following the seiz ure of the fishermen’s boats for arrears of tent by a British gunboat. Throughout tlie west of Ireland the failure is reported to be as complete as in 1879, «hen the contritiutions of tlie outside world alone averted a repetition of the famine rc«-nes of 1848 At that time it was clearly shown that the bur dens of rent and taxes imposed on there exceptionally barren districts were so much iMtyond their iesouices that every bad year exposed a large part of their population to absolute starvation; but from that time to this scarcely any ef fective means have h«'en taken to rem edy their condition. Even now seizures for rent are being carried on, with the whole power of the government at the service of the landlords. In Ktllarney, nt the end ot August, the public pound w as filled to overflowing with cattle and pics seized from the tenants on the Kenmateestate, and at the same time, ui Galway, Lord Clanticarde's agent ap- |'l.i d for fifty eviction orders against tiie equally slticken tenants on that noble in «n's projH-rtv. In the neighborlio'si of the I ti.-r, i'Vt n Balfour, in parliament, I a»i urg* d ttie construction of railroads with government funds to prevent a famire, and bad parsed his bill, though so clumsily that it cannot be applied for several months. With such a system of government the worst consequences may lie feared for the fate uf the population. The popular leaders are exerting tliemselver vigor ously to prevent the threatened destitu tion. A donation of three thousand dol lars I.as been made by a Tippt-rary land lord, Mr. Vincent Scully, and it is ex pected his example will be followed ex tensively. It is not, however, a distri bution of alms that the Irish leaders pro pose. They call for the application of a part of the public revenues to tlie con struction of long-needed public works, and also that the law shall not be lent to no Teas»» the horrors of starvation by de stroying the hous.-s of the peasantry « lien the crops have failed The money raised fr in private sources will be mainly devoted to in augurating public improvements until the coils of red tape can lie untwisted from the treasury. Even for that pur- p me, however, large expenditures will be needed, and it is to be hoped that no time will !>■> lost in organizing for the r collection both in Ireland and in this country —Examiner. TUE LOST SHIP FOTN'D. PRISE FIG ERES. I’eter Gee, a San Francisco capitalist and shipper, sometime ago fitted up the schooner Mary Anderson to embark in a treasure bunt for the steamer Brother Jonathan, wrecked alsrat twenty years ago off Point St. Georg--, near Crem'ent city. One day recently an ancient mariner '•ailed to see Lerentz Foard, a San Francisco slop chandler He introduced himself by saving that ne was one of the few -ailors that survived ttie wreck of tlie Brother Jonathan, lie Hai'l that tie felt confident that he could locate the exact spot where the Jonathan sunk years ago. Tlie sailor and the opjiortu- nify were emfiritced. He was sent with a diver named George Baker to the scene of tlie wreck and arrived thete in ad- vance of ttie Gee party. Long sounding lines were procured and the diver went out to Point St. »iei.irge in a small boat, from which they op'rated. Soundings were made for a distance of many miles from the jotted point where the ship met destruction. Tlie sailor’s theory was that tide and settlement had «bagged the ship away frotn the rocks and that she had been carried into deep water. After several dayea;»ent at this weary and monotonous wotk came a day of discovery and an era of results. While conducting tin- soundings several miles from Point St. »ieorge hi 100 fathom* of water the sensitive band of the diver felt a delicate strain on the rope. A hard resistance was felt at the line. It had come in contact with a substance foreign to the ocean l>uttom. Preparations were made at once to descend. The diver was lowered through fathoms of water until liis swaying feet touched tliebottom. IL' grop'd al» »ill for a c >n*iil o able time. Finally I e discoveri-d ■ t mding up in clear and sohtarj rel f tl.e beam of « hat was i nee a si i > •‘he r-st of the bull had lie. ri d< i-<,c : ,u a long laps»' of tim ur u. s sutuu.-rged in mountains ufeai.il. But the testimony was there. Baker found it iui|»ossible to remain under the «at»T h ng’ because he was in bk) fathoms. It could be no other than the ill-fated Brother Jonathan, about which so much lias been written and said. Baker returned to San Francisco and rejiorted his discovery, adding that be did not think it possible fora diver to raise the vessel. She lies in very deep water, and tl.c terrible pressure brought to bear precludes the idea of operating for over a minute on the ocean bed. But fr >m the <1.ver’s evi lenc«' a mystery ot years lias lieen part tally cleared—the Brother Jonathan lias been found. The schooner Mary Anderson is ex- jiected to arrive at Crescent city in a few days and the search for the treasure will he redoubled, now that some tangible proof of her location has been obtained after the costly efTjrts of many years. No better fruit land exists under the face of the sun than in Jackson county. The piune especially is best adapted to its soil and climate. The Pomona, Cal., Progreee of a recent issue gives the result of prune fatming there. Jackson county has all the essential qualities for the same or bet'er results. The Progress says: Thequantity of prunes in Pomona valley and dried here this season is about 1100 tons. Some people estimate ttie quantity at 1200 tone, hut the former figuies are conservative. The value of tills crop and amount paid for the labor in picking ami drying the same make prunes worth fully (60,000 to the va lev. .several long experienced fruit growers lielieve that James Loney, whose orchard is out on North Ellen street, will make over (430 an acre from 1ns prune crop this Beason. There are sixty six year old prune trees in Fredericks orchard that have tsjrne (550 worth of fruit this season. From only two acres of prune trees M. P. Russell has gathered and dried a crop that sold on Munday for (768, and the orchard has been shamefully neg lected for two years, too. Ttie sixteen-acre prune orchard of George Kober, in the northers part of Pomona, yields a crop of about 112 tons. Mr. Koher sold the crop to a cannery at «38 a ton on the trees. Mr. Kober, therefore, gets a check tor about (4200, and has nothing to do with harvesting the crop, or worrying about lazy pickers. That makes the yield over (260 an acre this season. The property was set out in April, 1884, and was valued in 1885 at (351) an acre, Now that it lias come intg bearing it yields a net profit equal to 10 per cent, interest on an investment of (2550 on each acre. How d es such a profit compare with th- pt util a irOni farming ami fruit-growing in the Ess ? There ate a z-n prune orcliatds here tiiat yield a emp worth f300 an acre this season. N. I’. Hardy’s five-acre prune orchard has cost (for ttie land, trees, taxes.irriga- tionetc., * exactly (311.45 an acre up to July last. The orchard was planted In 1884, and this is the second crop. Ttie gross receipts from the property thus far have been (887 |>er acre. In other words, the orchard has mere than paid for itself already, ami is now yielding a crop that is worth over (3iM) an acre eveiy year. In our humble estimation such a piece of property is worth not less than (150) an acre. 1< yields a crop repiesenting ¡0 |>er cent, annual interest on (3,000 an acre.
