The information contained in this bulletin is of necessity Irrief, and somewhat crude, for time’ will be re quired to enable the board to secure that information from practical experiments that shall tie of most valne to the or- chardistin particular, and to the horti culturist in ge.neral. THS CODUS KOTH. The Codlm moth is w.thont question the insect that needs to be looked after first, as it is without doubt the worst pest ever introduced into tbo state. It is needless to write at length about the ravages of thia enemy of the poar, apple and qttince; those who have suffered from bis acquaintance know him well; those who have been so fortunate a» to escape his acquaintance will do well to use the one ounce of preventive and keep him out, and ao have no need for Die pound of cure. It is only by "eter nal vigilance" that Oregon’s reputation for producing the "big red apple,” sound and free from worms, can be maintained. We therefore appeal not only to that first law of nature, "self preservation,” but to that nobler one that stirs the heart and prompts t< nobler dee ds that the entire state may be benefited there by. KEMHllIER AGAINST TIIE C DUN MOTH. TIMBER AND AGRICVLTVRAL LANDS. The following, from the 8. F. Cltrvn- •fte, applies so well to the same condi tion in »Milhern Oregon that wo print it: It is a common belief iu this state that the immense area of timber lands is good for nothing except fur the lumber that may be produced therefrom. This is especially true of that portion which lies at an elevation where snow falls fur some portion« of tin winter season. It is true that a great deal of the limber re gion is too rugged, steep and rocky to ever amount to anything in an agricultu ral sense. But there are thousands of acres now covered with standing timber the soil of which is deep and mellow, and made up as it is of the decaying vegetation of ages, it is of a highly 'fer tile character. In some of these local ities where the timber has been removed, energetic men have taken hold and have demonstrated that lor the production of apples, cherries, pears, potatoes, etc., the mountain soil is unrivaled. The mountain apples oi California have the best reputation wherever they are known. They seldom are allowed to reach the city market so great is the lo cal demand for them. They are large, firm of flesh, juicy, fine flivorei—in a word, the eery perfection ul what they ahotild bo. ’Hie potatoes, ton, wliu-h are grown in the mountains, are the best that can be produced anywhere, and al ways command a good price. There are thousands of acres of timber land in this state to-d ay which can be bought at a very low price, yet wtiiclr wi.'l amply repay in lumber for being cleared, while, when the trees are re moved. tint soil will lie found valuable in the highest degree for the production of the crops named as well as others. There are larg«i areas, too, wliielj have Jieem denuded ¿f their first growth and which arc c<>neidere.d by their owners as practically valueless. These can be had at a nominal price, and can be made as productive as the high-priced and much- van n. ted land of tile valleys. The idea that because snow fails some times, therefore it is useless to try to cultivate these lands, would provoke the ridicule of an eastern farmer accustomed to four er five feet of snow on his land. For many tilings the elevation necessary to he within the snow limit is in the highest degree beneficial. The <lav will come wbei. all the arable mountain lamia of California will Im held at their real value. Then the apples, plums, cher ries, currants, gooseberries, etc., pro duced there will gain a reputation simi lar to that already acquired by the or anges. raisins, olivas ami other fruits o the va) leys. There are two modi s < f fighting tin m generally made u*- of —01165» to prevent the hatching of Die egg, or the killing of the young worm while working into the fruit; lit • other is the catching of the worm in traps an it is escaping trom the fruit, or by having the fruit eaten by hogs as soon as it drops from the tree and before tiie worm escajies. The fir»t mode is without doubt the must eucces»ful, and is also the least expensive. This is ac complished by spraying the trees with London purple er Pans green, using one pi-uod of either to one hundred and fifty gallons of water. Paris green is a comp' Uiid of arsenic and copper, lt i« a far more powerful poison than hi sente alone, and ia not soluble in water, hence it will remain much longer on the tree«.
