GREAT REDUCTIONS
NO. 37
«»iti:«.o\s ex it i Kir.
The Oregon exhibit, says the San
Francisco Chronicle, consists of a
very large collection of cereals, native
woods, wild grasses, vegetables and a
number of mineral products which
have been carefully selected and ar
ranged under the supervision of P.
Schulze, Land Commissioner of the Or
egonaud California Railroad. The dis
play of woods was contributed by the
Oregon Furniture Manufacturing Com
pany, and comprises abler, laurel, oak,
maple, spruce, myrtle, cedar, ash, fir
and pine, the latter of which is com
monly but enormously known as Ore
gon pine. The exhibit contains about
seventy varieties of wil I grasses, the
average height of which is about six
feet. One specimen has attained the
enormous growth of eight feet and a
half. All of these grasses abound in
the Willamette and Umpqua valleys
and are highly nutritious for the pur
pose of forage. Several tin • specimens
of 11 ix in the collection are of excellent
quality, the fiber beingstio ig and fine
and of a peculiar silky glo-s. The col
lection also embraces contributions
from a large number of salmon canner
ies on the Columbia river, ami some
fine samples of wool collected from the
sheep-raising districts of the Mate, the
climate of the Willamette valley being
peculiarly adapted to this indu-try.
Some samples of Angora and Merino
wool are of good staple, fine lit er ami
strength, ami will compare favorably
with any grown in this State. Some
samples of pig iron from the Oswego
Iron Works, in Clackamas county, have
been declared by experts to be superi
or to the imported article. The dis
play of wheat, which is the staple p-o
duct of Oregon, is one of which the
State may justly feel proud. There
are a large number of varieties, emi r ic
ing both Winter ami Spring wheat,
the most noticeable and attractive dis
play being that ot George Bel-hawof
Lane county. This branch of industry
has reached such perfection in the
webfoot State that Oregon wheat now
demands a better price in Liverpool
than the California article. Among
other interesting products from this
growing State now on exhibition at
the Fair may be mentioned several fine
sample of fish oils, pecitnens of sand-
stone, granite basalt, and some main
moth blocks of Coos Bay coal, This
exhibit has a tendency to give one a
better idea of the rapid strides which
our sister State is making in agricul
tural industry and commercial prosper
ity than a whole volumn of books upon
the subject.
