Ex G overnor A llen of Ohio pass ed from theso earthly scenes on the morning of the 10th instant. Few are they that have not heard of this noble man. Prominently before the public in the past fifty years and more, be has been (J. S. Senator, Governor, Congressman, and in 1876 received the vote of Ohio for President in the St. Louis Convention. Combining un doubted ability with great force of character, Governor Allen was a leader among men. He was the parent of tbe “Ohio idea” on the financial ques tion, which, though fallacious to a cer tain extent, has been accepted by the masses of many of tbe Western States, irrespective of party. But the good old man has gone to rest and sleeps in peace besides hh illustrious ancestors. The nation mourns his loss, for it has few such patriots as ho to spare. the appearance in the New Northwest of a slanderous article reflecting iu a most unjust and uncalled-for manner upon one of our foremost citizens. And this resentment has been height ened, if that were possible,by the aban doned manner in which the sanctity of the family circle has been invaded and matters that were buried and forgot ten in tho long ago have been revived for the sinister purpose of venting malignant spite upon ono who enjoys the high esteem of all for the simple and only reason that he has chosen to differ with the author of this con temptible article. The people can have patience with none who would so ruthlessly violate the holiest laws of the land. We are not surprised that public execra tion should tie unbounded, fur it can not bo amiss. County Finance«. The annual exhibits of the County Clerk and Treasurer were last week submitted to the Commissioners and may be found in our advertising col umns. A glance at the figures shows that the county is nearly $10,000 in debt, an increase of over $4,000 during the fiscal year. This augmentation of our indebtedness is mainly due to an unusual amount of criminal business and extra expense incurred in re pairing and constructing roads and bridges. To counterbalance this debt there are assets amounting in the ag gregate to $5,553 86, consisting of claims against Like and Josephine counties (which will be paid in time) and cash in the Treasury. This, sub traded from the apparent indebted ness, would leave a deficit of over $4,000. It is therefore quite evident that even under ordinary circumstan ces it will he sometime before Jackson county will be able to pay her war rants upon presentation. will then go to San Frincisco and test their skill with those representing the Department of the Pacific, for the pur- pose of selecting a lentil to contest the honors at (..'reedmoor with tho repre sentatives of other departments.
