Monkey muffs are in common vogue. The ball and bridal season has be gun. Tullo illusion is the popular bridal veil. Furry felt hats and bonnets are the most worn. Fur is mueh used for bonnet trim ming at the moment. Bridal slippers may be either of white satin or white kid. Tinted white sat ins and gauzes are shown for bridal rol«es. The latest style of hosiery for chil dren is double over the knee. The fashionable fur robes for ladies’ carriages are in dark colors. Dark wine and garnet are the favor ite colors for children’s hosiery. Patchwork fur house-rugs are sold in some of the leading fur houses. The most costly silk hose have ovals of real lace inserted in the instep. Slippers have precedence over boots at the moment for the bridal toilet. Cream white of the medium shade is the most in favsr for bride’s dresses. Satin ribbon is used more than gros grain for bonnet trimmings and strings. Bridal gloves are of cream or pure- white kid, with from eight to twelve buttons. Wolverine and black bear robes are used for gentlemen’s open wagons and sleighs. Opaline pearl white is a beautiful and becoming shade for evening silks or satins. Street costumes grow plainer and plainer. Short, undraped princess dresses with the front of the skirt laid in plaits ami the back hreltdths gin med with folds of velvet, are mad«» up for walking dresses, with jackets that are almost tight fitting and which are double hreast«‘d to the waists and cut away l-elow it The cuff’s and collar are perfectly fiat, and the effect of the, whole costume is trim and elegant. The buttons are of polished wood or of velvet. An elegant barque for house dresses has the center forms of the back lengthened in!o*«|uare tabs, w liicli are trimmed with straight bands of the same material as th«* vest. The only apparent fastening of tin* basque is the two buttons which bold the outside to gether at the waist. The «leeves are small and are trimmed with four flat bands, the uppermost of which comes nearly to the elbow. This basque may tie made of blue ca-hmere with trim mings, and vest of white astraclian and tufts of curled woolen are intnaiueed into llie fringe of th«* tunic. A new in-door garment is of Indian silk, form ing a blouse above the licit line anti a tight basque below it. It fits very clox ly on the shoulders, and is trim med with cascades of Breton lace on tlie cuffs anti down the front. New York, Feb. 3d.—Tlie Tribune'« Washington special has this on to-day’s Senate proceeding«: lu the middle ol Conkling’s speech he took from hi.« pocket a large bundle of letters ad dresser! to Arthur, while he was Col lector, l»y different persons whose rela tions to the Administration are, or were more or less intimate, asking for the appointment of persons in tlie New Yrork Custom-house for various reasons given. Among the writers of these letters were McCrary, Governor Mc Cormick (w hen he was Assistant Sec retary of the Treasury), Rodgers, the President’« Private Secretary, and others. The scene in the Senate during the reading of these letters was a remark able one. None such has been wit nessed there for years. Conkling read one letter, asking that Bratlley lie provided for in the New York Custom-bons«*, because he was a son of Justice Bradley, of the Supreme Court. “Son of whon.?” shouted some Sen ator. “Son of Justice Bradley,” replied Conkling, in a very lout! voice. “What Justice Bradley is that?” aske«l another Senator. “Why, Justice Bradley*, of the Enc lorai (Commission,” said Mr. Conkling, “and on«« of lhe Supreme Court of tht United State«.” “Oh, ho !” shouted a third S« nator, then they wanted to provide fur him, did they ?” A similar scene occurred when another h*tter was read, asking for the appointment of John O. Howar«!, of Ohio, “who had written tiio life ol President Hayes.” «•Who««' life is11)at which he wrote?” shouted a Senator with his hand to hi.* ear. “Life of the President — President Hayes,” responded Conkling with some other remarks which were not com plimentary to the head ol the Admin istration; an t then there were excla mations of mock surprise and loud laughter in the Sénat«*. One letter asked for the appointment of a man because he was the w riter’s wife’s sister’s son. Altogether the exhibition which Conkling ma«le of th«» practice of the administration of tie* Civil Service was a very humiliating on«*, and it showed that, while the President may have been trying to reform the Civil Service, he has men around him w ho t«» say tlie least, have had tlie weakness of ordi nary politicians. GRISWOLD ET AL IN CHANCERY« Last November the United States recovered a verdict against W. C. Gris wold for $35,000. B. F. Dowell, for ass sling the Unite«! States, under the law, was entitled to one-half the amount recovered. Sundry motions for a new trial and “the law’s delay’s” prevented the ren* dition of a judgment on eaid verdict until about the 11th day of January. In tlie meantime certain parties doing busim*8s in S dem have been obtaining judgments by tlie consent of Griswold, it is charged, to defeat the claim of tite United States. On the 6tb of January’ there were .*o rendered in the County Court of Marion county, judg ment« in favor of Ben. Hayden, Wm. II. Ib lnies and Jas. W. Nesmith, fit about $500 each, claimed a8 attorneys’ fee«. As to Nesmith, however, it don’t appear that he Instigated tlie suit or even swore to the coiup'aint. Hill, Durham an<| Thomp«OH also brought suit in the Circuit Court of Marion county for $10,000 for att«»r- n«*ys’ fees in one suit, and have oh* taint*«! a decree for that amount with the a«*ent of Griswold. About thia lime other judgments were obtained with Griswold’s special assent. The Unite«! States Attorney, assisted by A. C. Gibbs and B. F. Dowell, have filed a bill in chancery in the U. 8. Cir* cuil Court to set all these judgments aside, so far as the interests of tlie United States ar«* concerned, and have said judgments In favor of the United States declared a lien upon all of Gris wold’s prop«*rty, and that such lien shall have priority* over all other judg ments. The suit i« brought under Section 3,406, of tire Rex ised Statutes of the United States, which sub-tantially «ays that when the «lefendant Is a bankrupt the Unit« «l States shall have a priority ovt r all oilier persons having a knowledge of the claim of the United States.
