It is of the first importance that
men who aspire to serve the people in
an official capacity should he compe
tent in the true sense of the word. It
is a notorious fact that many of the
candidates on the mongrel ticket
brought into existence last Saturday
are not only office-seekers of the most
chronic type, but lack the necessary
qualifications, to say the least. We
have not a word to say against them
personally, as it shall always be our
intention to studiously shun personal
ities. But the question we now have
under discussion is one that interests
all. It is not only necessary, but im
perative, that we should have live and
experienced men in the Legislature to
subserve our interests,which are varied
and increasing. No one will have the
hardihood to hold for a moment that the
legislative nominees put forth by tho
mass meeting will in any measure
fill the requirements of the offices
which they seek. A comparison with
their Democratic opponents would be
quite odious to themselves. Neither
Mr. Kahler nor Mr. Fountain will
claim any experience or particular fit
ness for Representatives. As for Mr.
lloss, he has been to the Legislature;
but the only thing w’e bear of him
there was when he appeared in his
