GROCERIES, They say that Dr. Mary Walker, growing extravagant, talks of trimming her panta loons with old lace. LADIES & GENTS’ FURNISHING GOODS, AT THE STORE OF Over a million of dollars have been sent from Washington to the Eastern States in trade dollars. A profit of 3 [»ereent. is thus made. Gohl and greenbacks are getting so close together in value that they are liable to “clasp hands aeioss the chasm” at almost any moment. A Kentucky farmer appropriates the yearly product of one acre ot his farm to the purchase of reading matter for himself and family. Wise. An orator declaring that fortune knocked at ever man’s door once, an old Irishman saiil: “When she knocked at mine, I must have been out.” The Alabama Democrats are overhauling Spencer’s reeonl, and claim that he will soon have as many indictments hanging over him as Patterson rests under. Samwell lost two of his most valuable dogs—one being tho “Clown”—while at Em pire City recently. One ot the troupe is suspected ofhaving poisoned them. Our Oregon Senators were “split up” on the Matthews silver resolution. Grover Voted tor it and Mitehell against. Which is the friend ot the people, and which of the bondholders? How nice it is to sit down and write your girl a delicately perfumed love-letter, and then to have that letter travel for a «lay or two in tho same bag in which a codfish is journeying by mail. All stock should bo sheltered duringcold, damp weather. It is inhuman to allow stock to stand out in all kinds of bad weather, Besides, good shelter saves feed i and keeps off disease. A Detroit woman who was turned out ot her house for non-payment of rent, went out in good style, putting on silks and jewelry , and having her hair frizzed in extra style for the occasion. The Chicago /hst says: Stanley Matthews only got two votes in the Republican caucus at Columbus, for the complimentary vote of the minority. The “friend of tho President” seems to be losing ground. We find in an Eastern exchange that the largest plow ever manufactured has just beeu made in Stockton, Cal. The 1 mold- board is 8 feet long, and a team of twelve animals is re<fuired to pull it. An exchange aptly illustrates the uncer- tainty of riches as follows: “A few years ago Mrs. Kat«» Sprague paid 82,0<>0 per yard for dress material. To-day her husband's paper sells for 2bj cts. on the dollar. An $80 SINGER for $60 ! It consists in the manufacture ot a cloth, much lighter and warmer than wool, from the feathers of domestic and other birds. The material is waterproof and takes dye readily. Tho area of the Unite«l States, including Alaska, its latest acquisition, is 3,603,8H I square miles. The area ot Europe, includ ing the a«ljacent islands, which contain about 317,000 miles, is 3,250,000, ot which Russia owns nearly one-third. While out sketching wild scenery in the neighborhood of Shasta, Cal., a couplo of ro mantic misses stumbled over a rich ledge of gold quartz. The art instinct instantly gave way to the practical, ami they hurried away to file their claim to what may prove a for tune. The Congressional Directory shows that out of 369 members of Congress only 103 are natives of the States which they represent. Only one State, North Carolina, is represent- i ed entirely by native-born citizens, while i the delegations of ten States do not contain a single native. At the show-window of Mr. Morse, Port land, can be seen on exhibition the veritable scalp of the Indian Chief American Horse, Sitting Bull's right hand man, who was killed and scalped by Captain Jack ('raw ford, who is now appearing at New Market Theater, Portland. Thirtj* years ago J. W. Mackey loft Ire land a penniless bov. Twenty years ago he was traveling in this country as a drum mer. Sixteen years ago he was bankrupt. Now he owns some of the richest mines on the Pari lie coast, and has a yearly income I estimated at nearly 814,000,000. Th«> reports to the National Grange show that there are now 14,634 subordinate I granges, with 588,537 members in the Uni ted States. Ohio has 1,214; Indiana, 1,145; Iowa, 1,018, and Kentucky,1,003. No other States have more than 1,000 granges. The nntnber of new granges started last year was but 115. On a very rainy day, a man entering his houso was accosted by his wife in the fol lowing manner: “Now, my dear, while you are wet, go and fetch a bucket of water. H«> otieyed, brought the water, and threw it all over her, saying, at the same time; “Now, my dear, while you are wet, go and fetch another.” It is the opinion of Southern papers, al most without exception, that the negroes in the South are dying almost at the rate ot four to one, as «iotnpared with the whites. The causes are uncleanliness, lack of proper food, clothing, shelter and cooking, sensual «’xcesses of all kinds, drunkenness, negltict of the sick, the pref«*rence of “conjurors” to physicians, ami absenct; of proper precau i tion ; again I contagious diseases.
