casions the most noticeable feature In
this season’s fashions is the almost
uncalled for length of the court trains.
The Empress dress, beautiful as it is,
seems rather designed for a court dress
than for our receptions or ball rooms;
but fashion is fashion, and we have
but to note tho exceeding richness
with which these dresses are fin­
ished. Tho front of a dross may be of
simple material, such as gauze or crepe;
it is tight and clinging to the figure, is
short enough to show the feet, and is
easy to walk in, but the back of tho
dress, which swells out in an immeas­
urably long train, is of some rich bro­
cade or Pompadour material, and is
held back by quaintly designed orna­
ments, in which ribltons, birds’ wings,
gold ornaments, representing daggers
or pins, or the ubiquitous horse-shoes,
are all mingled together; or long lines
of embossed leaves and flowers, or laces
thick with tassels of seed pearls amid
