Men are born with two eyes, but with one tongue, in order that they should see twice as much as they say. The agrants in the lower cities all have canes, so that the otlicers can see that they have a visible meaus of support. “At what age were you married?” asked sho inquisitively. But the other lady was equal to the emergency and quietly respond ed, “At the parson-age.” If she doesn’t invite you into her house, after having escorted her home, it isn't worth while to waste any more ice cream on her—your case is ho|»eless. A clergyman startled his flock a few Sun day evenings ago by telling them: “Hell is not half so full of men and women as men ami women are full of Hell.” The exports from the Willamette Customs District lor the month of October amounts to J»i00,(!00. There are now twenty-five ships in the river at Portland. Andrew Jackson was accused of bad spell ing, but John Randolph defended him by declaring that “a man must be a fool who could not sj»ell words more ways than one.” A young man named Baker was shot ami instantly killed near Forest Grove,Sunday before last, by another man named Dickens. The shooting is claimed to have been acci dental. A farm on the Rio Grande belonging to Col. Ring consists of 160,000 acres, all fenced. He owns 22,000 horses, 30,000 cows, 72,000 sheep, and 30,000 mules. He employs 300 Mexicans as herders. Sitting Bull told the Commissioners that he did not want to kill Gen. The court holds these under advisement till the 26th inst. Senator Morton's full'name was Oliver Hazard Perry Throck Morton, and he used to be fond of prefixing all these initials to his surname. It was his legal preceptor, •J >hn Newman, who persuaded him to leave out some of these names. The white cigar makers in San Francisco are endeavoring to get the manufacturer.', in that city to discharge the Chinamen in their employ and employ white c.g.ir mak ers from New York. It looks as if the move ment would be successful. Wealthy Chinamen of San Francisoo are suspected ofcrippling the feet of their little girls, after the fashion in their own country. Ah Moon is under arrest for having removed tiie bones from his daughter's feet, so that they could be compressed. Senator Booth has submitted a resolution calling upon the President for information concerning the Nez Perces war, number ot soldiersand Indians engaged therein, lives lost, cost of war and what disposition had been made of Chief Joseph. One of the San Francisco hotels has ntroduced a new and useful feature. It is a “drunk room.” When a customer becomes so much intoxicated that he can't take care ot himself he is put into that room and kept there until he is ablo to navigate. We are informed, says the Mercury, that Mrs. Lorenzo Stewart, of Molalla, Clacka mas county, who has been atllicted with a cancer on her left cheek for three years past, has received permanent relief, under the treatment ot Mr. Win. You have got them all; but for goodness sake, don’t ask me for tho old wo man!” In Massachusetts, a man who cannot read the Constitution in the English language, or who cannot write his name, or who has not paid his taxes, is not allowed to vote. This is a good item for Southern papers. It would look well floating from the “mast head.” A gentleman walking up Main street at Salt l^ake, said, in a loud tone of voice: “How are you, prophet?” Fourteen hydra headed fellows turned around and told him it was none of his business. The crowd of prophets is unusually large this year, but the quality is decidedly poor. Tho uses of the telephone continue to mul tiply, one of the latest examples being given on a New York Central train the other day, when communication was opened between the locomotive and the rear car, so that or dinary conversation between two extremes was distinctly carried on in spite ol the noise of the moving train. He was a wild Texan, just from the fron tier, and boarded the train at Fort Worth for Dallas. It was his first ride on the ‘•keers,” and as the conductor reached in his hip pocket for the punch the sharp eye of the Texan caught the glimpse of its polished handle. Quick as thought he leveled a navy six on that conductor, saying, “Put ’er up lor I’ll blow daylight through you.
