vorably with Chewaucan in climate,
the pursuits of its residents, etc. It
is a magnificent grazing region, with
an extensive country north, extend
ing into Wasco county, known as the
desert, so little water existing there
that no stock can live on it during
Summer. But little snow falls on it
during Winter, when the range is ex
cellently adapted for grazing; and
many drive their stock upon it during
that season. Tho altitude of Silver
Lake valley is so great that no garden
vegetables will grow there, and its set
tlors come to Goose Lake for their
ffour, giving them 120 miles only to
go to the mill. I should have men
tioned that nearly all the vegetables,
including tomatoes and melons, grow
of the finest size and quality in Che
waucan and Summer Lake valleys.
Drew’s valley, on the west, is like Sil
ver Lake, frost prevailing every night
in the the year. It is said to be the
most beautiful and picturesque in its
scenery of all these valleys. It is also
devoted to grazing.
