On July 4 tli tho conference of
the Grand Council of the United States
of the Order of the Americau Alliance
met at Philadelphia, and <mminnied
for President RuthèrfoYtf B. Hayes, of
Ohio, and for Vice-President William
-A. Wheeler, of New York.”
On July 5th Governor Hayes re
ceived a Committee of |he Order at
the Continental Hotel, thanked them
for the nomination, and accepted it.
On July 9th, in Columbus, Ohio, a
sub-committee, of which William D.
Black, of Pennsylvania, was chairman,
waited upon Governor Hayes, and pre
sented him with the full Constitution
of the Order and the Oath, and in
formed him of his election as an hon
orary tneiuber. The committee also
hau'ied him the resolutions of nomi

membership and the nominatiou.
On July 10th, Alfred E. Lee, Secre
tary to Governor Haves, wrote to L.
S. Tyler, Box 2071, New York, Secre
tary of the Order, thanking the Alli
ance, and promising matérial aid.
On September 13th, A. E. Lee, Sec
retary, wrote to Carnei L. Markbreit :
“It is not true that Gemmai Hayes
has given any assurance of sympathy
with or indorsement of declarations
against the naturalization of foreigners,
or the privileges of foreign born citi
zens.
The story that Governor Hayes ever
indorsed such sentiments by letter, or
otherwise, is utterly false.”
The Constitution of the Order pro
vides “that the object for which this
Order is organized is an ain.-nduumt
of the Naturalization L. iwó , limiting
the suffrage to persons born in this
country, or of American parents. The
election of Arnericau born persons only
to official [»editions in this country.”
The Oath of the Order is : “I sol
emnly swear that I will not vote for
any person or persons for any official
position who are not American born
citizens.”
Governor II »yes was in possession of
the Constitution and the Oath. lie
accepted the nomination with full
knowledge of their provisions.
Lee, his secretary, absolutely denied
that
