The Republican candidate for Presi
dent, Gov. Hayes, of Ohio, is shown
by the Cincinnati Enquirer to be a
back pay salary grabber while in Con
gress. The charge is, not that Hayes
was in Congress w’hen the last back
pay bill was passed, but that he is a
meaner salary grablier than the latest.
He put into his pocket-book back pay
to the amount of $2,000, under pecu
liarly offensive and disreputable cir
cumstances. The grab in that case
was attached to the soldiers’ bounty
feature of the appropriation bill. The
retroactive feature was the same with
that of the last grab act. On the 24th
of July, 1866, the grab was fastened
upon the House appropriation bill in
the Senate.. On the 27th of July the
House refused to concur in the amend
ment. The question went to tho Con
ference Committee. On the same day,
the 27th, the Conference Committee
reported in favor of the salary grab
amendment, dropping the soldiers’
bounty entirely.
