F rom the B lack H ills .—Charles
Hull, an old resident and miner in this
county, returned from the Black Hills
to this «ection on la-t Sunday’s stage,
anti he informs ns that the Black Hills
mining excitement is the biggest fraud
out. There are two or three claims
there, that, by the most improved
methods, can ho made to pay. A com­
pany of eight, of which hi* was one,
after prospecting around took up a
claim and gave it a trial. 11c* showed
us his share and another partner’s to­
gether of the gold they took out and
it looked to beabout >i.">0 worth, which
would make about sG.OO between the
eight. Upon realizing this immense
amount they pulled up stakes and left.
Mr. Hall says that there are as many
returning from lite Black Hills every
day a- there are going, and yet there
is no use trying to stop them on the
road, as they won't believe anything
told them and arc bound to go in and
see for themselves. Custar City is the
principal town near the mines and it is
about 270 miles from Cheyenne. Ev­
erything is at *11» prices at tho mines.

we know is good: Take hall- a bushel
of freshly burned lime ; slake it with
boiling water; cover it dining the pro­
cess, to keep in tho steam. »Strain the
liquid through a line sieve, and add
to it seven pounds of salt previously
well dissolved in a warm water; three
pounds of rice boiled to a thin paste
and stirred in boiling hot; one half
pound of powdered .Spanish whiting;
one pound of clean glue, which has
been previously well dissolved by soak­
ing it well, and then hanging it over a
slow fire In a small kettle, within a
larger one, filled with water. Add live
gallons of water to the mixture, stir it
well and let it stand a few days cover­
ed from dirt. It must be put on quite
hot. For this purpose it can be kept
in a kettle on a portable furnace.
About a pint of this mixture will cover
a square yard.”

I t now transpires that tho true in­
wardness of the delay in Delano’s re­
signation as .Secretary of the Interior
was a threat he held over the Presi­
dent’s head in regard to Orvil’s rascal­
ity in connection with the post-trader-
Bhips. When Grant demanded Dela­
no’s resignation last Summer, he has­
tened to Long Branch and shook
evidence of Orvil’s roguery in the
President’s face and defied Grant to
push him from his place in the Interior
Department. Grant saw Delano was
not in a humor to be trifled with; and
he had to tamely submit and permit
the Secretary to resign at leisure. It
is now thought that if Delano can be
summoned as a witness, evidence
enough can be brought to impeach
Grant, Delano, Cowen, and that they
are ready to jump the country if an
attempt is made to make them testify.

Forbes, manager and »Superintendent
of the Oregon Quartz Mill and Mining
Company, writing from Kerbyville,
under date of April 27th, says: “1
send you some of the news at the
mines. The O. Q. M. & M. Co., after
laying up all winter, have once more
started their works, and are opening
up their quartz lodes with vigor. I
am happy to say that this company
mean business. They are now run­
ning two tunnels on a fine looking vein
of gold-bearing quartz, nearly four feet
In width, and showing splendid walls
and clay casings. This lode is situated
in the hill above their mill, and has
large amounts of territory. Gold was
taken out just below their location in
the good old times. They may hope
and enjoy a golden time when they
get this lode properly opened.

prevailing extravagance of the people
of the present day by calling attention
to the costly baby carriages in use now,
while, when ho was a baby, they haul­
ed him around by the hair of the head.
