C entennial M eeting .—Pursuant
to notice, several of our citizens from
various portions of the county assem
bled at the Court House last Saturday
afternoon for the purpose of arranging
the preliminaries for the appropriate
celebration of the Centennial anniver
sary of our National Independence.
E. D. Foudray, Esq., was called to the
Chair and Max Muller chosen Secretary.
It was decided to hold a three days’
celebration, commencing on the 4th of
July and ending on the Gth, in Ish’s
Grove. A Committee on General Ar
rangements was selected, consisting
of John S. Herrin, Jacob Ish, John
A. Boyer, John O’Brien, K. Kubli,
Herman Helms, E. D. Foudray, W. H.
Simpson, N. C. Dean, H. 1*. Phillips,
•which was given authority to appoint
sub-committees and transact all other
business pertaining to the celebration.
The meeting adjourned after ordering
the proceedings published in the local
papers. Further particulars will be
published hereafter.
Jackson county has thus sensibly
resolved for one general celebration,
and we trust that everybody will aid
ju making it a grand success.
LOCAL BREVITIES.
Sifers, ot Josephine county, have re
corded their location of a quartz ledge
in the vicinity of those mines. It has
been named the Salee Lardam (save
your bacon) and is supposed to he
promising enough to warrant thorough
prospecting.
J. S. Howard’s surveying party left
the forepart of the week to survey a
ditch by which it is proposed to bring
water from Griffin’s creek to the placer
diggings in John Orth’s pasture, and
which are supposed to be rich. The
enterprise is liable to be of great im
portance to this section, and we trust
that it will prove entirely feasible.
The roads north of town, especially
the greater portion of those between
Grant’s Pass and Roseburg, being so
rough as to render travel over them
at night almost impracticable, the
time has been so changed that the
stages from both north and south ar
rive now in Jacksonville late at night,
while the bad places are traveled in the
daylight.
