A n I nteresting W atch .—A watch
on exhibition in the window of Gill A
Hayes is one of the most interesting
of the Centennial curiosities yet
.brought to light. It was formerly the
property of Augustine Washington,
the man who embraced his son be­
cause he wouldn’t tell a lie, and it now’
belongs to Harry A. Arnold. His
grandfather, living at West Stock-
bridge, manufactured boots and shoes,
and was accustomed, al>out once a year,
t j take a trip to Virginia, with a team,
to dis|»ose of his production and other
Ivarter, and this watch came to him in
part payment for a horse. It is an
open-faced watch, without a crystal,
the outer case being of W’ood and sil­
ver. This can be taken off, and the
inside case is of silver, with a little
slide over the keyhole. There is noth­
ing to indicate when or where the
watch was made, but it is certainly old-
fashioned enough to have the history
attributed to it— Springfield (Mass.)

T he O ldest T wins .—A Boston pa­
per reports that the oldest pair of twins
in this country, and perhaps in the
world, reside in Massachusetts, one in
West Springfield, and the other in
Goshen. Their names are Daniel and
James Prince, and Wednesday, Decem­
ber 22d, was their ninety-first birth­
day. They strongly resemble each
other in form, feature and manner,
have always been remarkably healthy,
and are still active mentally and physi­
cally. Their father, Daniel Prince,
came to this country as a soldier under
Burgoyne, in the war of the Revolu­
tion, and was with his army while on
its way to Boston as prisoners of war.
Prince fell out of the ranks and be­
came a resident of Williamsburg,
Mass., where he spent his days and
brought up a family. Ono of the
twins above named was for many
years an employee and inspector of
the Springfield Armory.

A F raud .—Another swindle on far­
mers is advertised in numerous Cali­
fornia journals. It hails from Ten­
nessee, and the article is a new variety
of wheat, which is asserted to yield
from eighty to one hundred bushels to
the acre. Tliis wonderful grain is sold
at one cent per kernel, and agents
warranted to earn from $5 to $10 per
day in selling it. The advertising is
to be performed for packages of wheat.
Farmers are notified that the new
wheat business is a snare and a delu­
sion, gotten up expressly to rob them,
and every journal containing the ad­
vertisement is assisting this nefarious

A great deal of harm is done
through forgetfulness. A little thought­
fulness and care with respect to others
would often save them from a great
deal of suffering, and aid them in their
work. A man is discouraged in con­

with. An encouraging word may be
all that is necessary to revive his en­

willing to speak it, but they do not
think of it, as they are busy with
their own work. The discouraged one
sinks into deeper despondency, not
through their heartlessness, but their
thoughtlessness. A young man is ex­
posed to temptation. He is about to
take a step from which a little influ­
ence of the right kind will save him.
There are numbers among his acquain­
tances who could exert that influence.
But they do not see his danger, or are
so busy that they must leave him to
the care of his other friends. He takes
the step, and it leads to his ruin. A
little effort, rightly put forth, would
have saved him.
