The terms refers to a collection of buildings on one of the seven hills of Rome, which cover a space of 1,200 feet in length and 1,000 feet in breadth. It is built on the spot once occupied hy the garden of Nero. It owes its origin to the Bishop of Rome, who, in the early part of the sixth century, erected an humble residence on its site.— About the year 1100, Pope Eugenius rebuilt it on a magnificent scale. In nocent II. gave it up as a lodging to Peter II., King of Arragon. In 1305, Clement V., at the instigation of the King of France, removed the Papal See from Rome to Avignon, when the Vatican remained in a condition of obscurity and neglect for more than seventy years. But soon after the return of the Pontifical Court to Rome, an event which had been so earnestly prayed for by Petrarch, and which finally took place in 1376, the Vatican was put into a state of repair, again enlarged, and it was thereafter considered the regu lar palace of the Popes, who, one after another, added fresh buildings to it, and gradually encircled it with antiq uities, statues, pictures, books, etc., until it became the richest depository in the world. The library of the Vatican was commenced 1400 years ago, and con tains 40,000 manuscripts, among which are many Hebrew, Syrian, Arabian and Armenian Bibles. The whole of the immense buildings composing the Vatican are filled with statues found beneath the ruins of an cient Rome; with paintings hy the masters, and with curious medals and antiquities of every description. When it is known that there have been exhumed more than 70,000 stat ues from the ruined temples and pal aces of Rome, the reader can form some idea of the richness of the Va tican.— Occident. A metal worth $3,000 per pound! Who ever heard of the like before? It is called Tellurium. Prof. W. F. Stewart published a communication in the Virginia City papers, calling at tention of miners to its presence there. The following is an extract from his article : “Long since, professor Kustel and other eminent chemists decided that the ores of the Comstock are osten. tially. a ‘telluride of gold and silver,’ and it is reasonable to expect a small quantity of the precious metal tellu rium will be discovered in our mines. I take pleasure in calling the attention of mining men to search for this val uable ore. Tellurium has hitherto been so excessive rare that but little of it has been applied in the useful arts. Any one who may find even a thin seam of tellurium will have an immediate source of wealth, for I am creditably informed that it is now valued at $3,000 per pound. I am in formed that what little of tellurium can be procured is mainly used in tem pering of steel for surgical instru ments.” This ultra-precious ore is as likely to he discovered in the mines of the Northwest Coast as Washoe, and it might be well worth while for the mi ners up this way to pay some attention to the processes of discovering and extracting this marvelous metal. R omantic I ncident at S ea .—A romantic incident occurred on the last trip of the steamer Rotter, due from Rotterdam to New York. Among the cabin passengers were a Mr. Van Seller and Miss Maria Reuter, who were engaged to be married. To give the event an air of romance they had decided to have the ceremony per formed on board the ship in mid-ocean. On the evening preceding the day fixed for the wedding, it transpired that the young ludy was the young man’s half-sister. It appeared by ex. planations given to the passengers that Van Seller left his home in Amster dam when only ten years old, shipping as a cabin boy on board a vessel Itound for the West Indies. He revisited his native home after a lapse of five years, but finding that his father had die<I during the interval, and his mother had married again, he shipped once more, and did not return until about two months ago, wheu he was unable to find any trace of his mother. Dur ing a visit to Rotterdam he met Miss Reuter, and an attachment at once sprang up between them, which re sulted in an engagement. In talking about their early days they acciden tally discovered their relationship. It has been arranged that Miss Reuter shall return on the next steamer.
