LETTER FROM ASHLAND.
A shland , Sept. 14, 1875.
ASHLAND NOTES.
A shland , Sept. 13th.
Cool nights are joy to us but death
to the flies.
Morris Baum, of the firm of McCall
A Co., has gone to San Francisco for
Fall and Winter goods.
O. Coolidge recentlj’ sold to some
parties from Jacksonville a site for a
Catholic Church. The plat is north of
town, and $200 was the price paid for
it.
The quill-driver of the Sentinel was,
I see, severely attacked with the ago
ny because your typo transposed a
couple of letters in a word that occurred
in a former correspondence of mine.
In his criticism he says: ‘-We are
‘(•oreced’ to have tn,” Ac. Oh, what
a fine thnught I And such beauty of
expression ! I commend that clause to
our text-honk compilers.
Our standard-bearer in the political
contest addressed a good, appreciative
audience at this place on Wednesday
of last week. Ho is a fair, logical rea-
soner, ami a faithful exponent of Dem
ocratic tenets. Ilis every act scorned
to say “Whatsoe’er my hands finds to
do, I’ll do with all my might.” He
vowed, if elected, continuous labor for
negb-cted Southern Oregon. Our peo
ple like him ; and he will receive at
the Ashland polls on election day more
than the Democratic vote.
“Lost River Ranger,” the mammoth
ox of Lake county, was on free exhi
bition at the livery stable Saturday
and Sunday last. He was quite an
object of interest to the curious. We
have a venerable “jo ulist” who has a
fame for quelling his antagonist in
wordy tussles by asserting that the
object of his theme is “as large as they
had machinery to make.” He saw
this ox and pronounced him a “big
thing.” The joker has retired for
quiet meditation. If he has not seen
a larger one, he’ll be banished. Our
jester must be equal to all emergencies.

The Congressional candidates held

The atmosphere is rather smoky

Music and G erman .—Miss Weber
is now in charge of the music depart
ment of the Ashland Academy. As
a music teacher she has an excellent
reputation. Miss Weber will also
teach the German language. She is
of German parentage, and therefore
speaks that language fluently. An
excellent opportunity is offered for all
to study German.
