Since its Saturday’s issue, the Port land Bulletin has failed to arrive here, and from the following obituary in the Portland Evening Journal it seems that it has given up the ghost: “Gone where the woodbine twineth,” is the mournful epitaph on the late daily Bulletin'* tombstone this morn ing. Ono hundred and sixty thousand dollars havo been expended to keep the paper alive since the first number was Issued, and now we can say that one hundred and sixty thousand dol lars have been thrown away as ¡»earls cast to swine, and no one is better off, not even tho world which it took upon itself to reform in its salutatory. The Democratic party, however—the party it has declared dead so often during its erratic existence—yet Ilves and flourishes, ready to hire the band to play the death march in honor of the jackass that was always kicking it A1MM4 «r Th« tn. Although Messrs. Lane and Whit ney agreed that an -hour was an ap propriate period which each candidate should consume at the joint discussion in this place, (a rather a short time itself,) Mr. Warren objected, arguing that it was too long. He thus evinced a timidity for his competitors, or at least admitted that he had little to say for himself or his cause. It appears evident already that the campaign will become a very monotonous affair to Mr. Warm before he proceeds far. K. KUBLI, E. 11. REAMES. T. G. REAMES. I zen “to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience,” are not to be frightened out of their wits by any such a bugaboo, as our Repub lican friends will find when the votes are counted in October. This is the old Know-Nothing cry revived, and will as certainly bury the Republicans in this campaign as it did that party years ago. The man who attempts to ride into power on any such hobby as this Catholic question is a weak dem agogue, and would, to serve a party pnd, drag church and religion into the very slum of the political cess-pool. Such persons deserve a crushing re buke from Christians of all denomina tions, and will certainly receive it in October. Xu u«e to Protest. The Salem Statesman protests against Mr. Warren being held responsiole for the trickery of Mallory and Under wood which they perpetrated on Mr. Whitney. That protest had better be written on buckskin, so that it will last, as a warning for future Radical Conventions. It makes but little dif ference whether Mr. Warren had a hand in It or not. His name was the property of the Radical Convention, says the Enterprise, and whatever sin that Convention committed can only be reached now by voting against Mr. Warren. That is the only show the Radicals and Independents have who are honest enough to repudiate such trickery. It seems to us that the Radical Convention was uot satisfied with piling on Mr. Warren the “ins of Grant A Co., but even those of Mallory, Underwood and Ben Simpson. The lat ter alone would be enough to consign him to his quiet retreat In Yamhill, where this same corrupt crowd serM him short time ago. 4 differ slightly with our cotemporary, however, regarding Linn always being the banner Democratic county. This county gave Gov. Grover the largest majority in 1870, as also Burnett in 1872, and is ever in front rank, though we admit Linn always responds nobly. ——— ’ X A Chronic Ofllee-Sceker.
