Very Strange.
Some time since, Hon. L. F. Lane
sent Messrs. Whitney and Warren, the
Independent and Republican nominees,
an invitation to canvass the State with
him. Mr. Whitney responded imme
diately, in a courteous manner accept I
ing ; but nothing was heard from Mr.
Warren until several days afterwards,
when he answered in the affirmative,
stating that his failure in replying
sooner was owing to the fact that he
had just received Mr. Lane’s invita
tion. On looking over the Yamhill
Reporter, Mr. Warren’s local organ,
we see reference made to this very
letter of Mr. Lane some days prior to
the date of Warren’s reply. Now, it
is evident that he either prevaricates I
in the premises, or the editor of the
Reporter is guilty of taking unpardon
able privileges with Mr. Warren’s !
mail matter. But, then, we can hard
ly blame Warren for being averse to
taking the stump.
Sheridan Coming.
Gen. P. II. Sheridan is now on this
Coast on a visit, and upon the invita
tion of Gen. O. O. Howard is expected
to visit Portland very soon. Phil, used
to he stationed in Oregon at an early
day, and on his exit from this State
left several young Sheridans behind,
some of which now reside in this coun
ty. He will doubtless be received
with much ceremony by tho military, i
and the authorities of Portland are
also making preparations for his re
ception.

A V ni ted Support.
We have never known of a political
campaign where the Democratic press
was more united and harmonious
than in the present. Every Democratic
journal in the State from Baker City
to Jacksonville, says the Mercury, is
working with a will for the- triumph
ant election of Hon. L. F. Lane.
“In unity there is strength.” This
union on the part of the press speaks
volumes for the popularity of a candi
dane and will tell on election day by
his triumphant election to the Halls of
Congress.

Now and Then.
The School Fund, since the Demo
cratic administration came into power
in this State, has increased nearly a
quarter of a milfion of dollars, and is
steadily swelling and becoming larger
and larger. While Woods was Gov
ernor, not a dollar of the interest on
the irreducihle school fund was dis
tributed towards the support of free
schools ; but a large amount was lost
by loaning these funds to irresponsible
party favorites.

that resolution of the Ohio Democracy

State, will readily seo that it favors
nothing of the kind, the following be

heretofore made by the Republican
party, and the further contraction pro
posed by it, with a view to the forced
resumption of specie payments, have
already brought disaster to the busi
ness interests of the country, and
threaten it with general bankruptcy
and ruin. Wo demand that this pol
icy be abandoned, atyl that the volume
of currency be made and kept equal to
the wants of trade, leaving the restor
ation of legal tenders to a par with
gold to be brought about by promoting
the industries of the people, and not
by destroying them.”
This plank is an expression of the
Democracy of Ohio in the present State
campaign, and such Is its popularity
that it is generally conceded by well
informed members of all parties that
a large majority will 1« given the par
ty that adopted it. • Senator Thurman,
Hon. Geo. P. Pugh and the leading
members of the Democratic party of
Ohio, are pronounced enemies of infla
tion, yet they are stumping the State
for their ticket. Even Hon. Geo. II.
Pendleton, who has the reputation of
being endowed with queer and ultra
greenback ideas, is quoted as saying
that he is averse to being considered
in favor of inflation. Even if this res
olution does promulgate principles of
inflation, it does not by any means fol
low that the party elsewhere favors
the same, especially when an unmis
takable hard money resolution is adopt
ed by ifs Convention as has been thp
case in every State where the Democ
racy has met.
Result of Democratic Rule.
Another of the beneficent conse
quences of restoring the Democratic
party to power is given by the New
York Bulletin, a commercial organ, as
follows:
But recently we had the pleasure of not
ing that one of the hitherto defaulting South
ern States had made provision for meeting
its July interest. The State was Arkansas,
which is fast redeeming its credit and re
covering its prosperity under its new and
popular regime. The telegraph announces
that another of the delinquent Southern
States has already begun paying the July
interest on its new consolidated bonds.
This is one of the first fruits, as in Arkansas,
ot the new administration of the Govern
ment of this State, in which the people have
but recently secured a voice. No better re
sults aie needed to vindicate the South in
its right of self-government, and no further
comment is needed to characterize the form
er management of its affairs. In view of
these facts, and the renewed vigor and pros
perity of these States for the current season,
it may safely be concluded that the present
is tho only road to the full return of pros
perity, redemption of credit and honest
government in the South.
Mr. Lane on Free School«.
The Republican papers in the pres
ent campaign seem to raise up men of
straw and then knock them down.
They have charged Mr. Lane as being
opposed to free schools and general ed
ucation before he has made any dec
laration that he was. But all his form
er life and speeches are directly the
reverse of the ch irges made by the
Radicals and give the lie to them.
Mr. Lane at the ratification meeting
the other evening, says the Salem Mer
cury, said that he was in favor of and
supported "free schools. That he paid
his taxes for their support and that his
children were receiving instruction in
a free school, or a school supported by
taxation and interest from the common
school fund. These uncalled for at
