FRIDAY
DECEMBER 18, 1874.
This tragedy took place in 1857. It
implies the murder of a company of
180 emigrants in a train from Arkan
sas. The place of the massacre i«
known as Mountain Meadow, a small
▼alley some 300 miles southwest of
Salt Lake. They had $150,000 in gold
and much stock and other valuable
property. Tho company was com
posed of men, women and children.
They were attacked by a party who
seemed to he Indians, and defended
themselves for five days. At the end
of that time a large party of armed t
Mormons appeared on the scene,
says the Sacramento Union recently,
the Indians having suddenly disap
peared.
These Mormons, as it now
comes out from the children who were
spared in the massacre, after treacher
ously inducing the emigrants to disarm
and start back towards Salt Lake, mur
dered all the men and women, and
spared none but the smaller children.
The leader of the band of Mormons
was one John D. Lee, hut others are
Implicated, and will soon be brought
to trial in the United States District
Court at Salt Lake.
