JACKSONVILLE, OREGON, FRIDAY, OCT. 9, 1874
LETTER FROM JOSEPHINE.
mantling “Hassler.”
Mr. J. B. Sifers, Kerbyvilie, Oregon.
It will be observed that from the
source from whence the above infor
mation is derived that it is perfectly
complete and reliable.
I would further say, that having
traveled repeatedly over a portion of
the line of the proposed road, down
the Illinois river, and having been in
formed by a number of reliable per
sons who have traveled over the bal
ança of the route, I conclude first—
that the route is practical ; second—
that the cost of construction will be
comparatively light for a mountain
road ; and third—that from the nature
of the ground and lay of the country
it would be, when completed, the most
substantial road of any in Oregon of
the same length, and a road that
would be as a general rule open all
winter.
I desire here, on behalf of all those
interested, to return thanks to Lieu
tenant Taylor for the very efficient
manner in which he has supplied us
with the foregoing information.
It will I m * observed that Lieut. Tay
lor refers to anchorage below or south
of Pistol river, and proffers informa
tion in detail in regard to that point
or any other matter. Should such
detailed information be desired by any
person, a communication directed to
him at Crescent City will reach him.
