PACIFIC COAST MEWS. Sb ?Penwrratic Official Paper for Jarkxon k Jovphine fonntiri. CHARLES NICKELL, • • EDITOR. * FRIDAY................... SEPTEMBER 18, 1874. THZ LEUINLATt BE. Th« eighth biennl.il session of the legislature convened nt Salem last Monday, all the members in their sents. The Senate effected a temporary organization by electing Mr. Cochran, of Lane, President pro tern ; S.vl. C. Simpson, Chief Clerk ; R. M. Guerney, Sergeant-at-arms ; J. C. Head, Door keeper. The House of Representatives or ganized temporarily by electing J. C. Drain, of Dondas, as Speaker, and Col. W. L. White, of Clackamas, Clerk. After transacting other pre liminaries, the House got as far as balloting for Speaker, which was the latest news up to the time of writ ing. W. W. Fiddler, of Josephine, is the nominee of the Democrats, C. A. Reed, of Marion, of the Republi cans, and J. C. Drain, of Douglas, of the Independents. Three hnllots were taken, and the following is the result: First Ballot.— Whole number of votes cast, 58. Necessary to a choice, 80. Drain, 23 ; Reed, 15 ; Fiddler, 18 : Raleigh Stott, 1. No election. Second Rallof.— Whole number of votes cast, 56. Necessary to a choice, 30. Drain. 24 ; Fiddler, 19 ; Reed, 15 ; Stott, 1. No election. Third BoZM.—Number of votes cast, 59. Drain, 23 ; Fiddler, 20 ; Reed, 20. A mistake appears In the press re port of the third ballot, as there are but 60 members, and 63 votes are re corded. There is one contest in the Senate —between T. R. Cornelius and P. G. Buford, as Senator from Washington. In the House there are tw-o contests— one between G. Reynolds and Bart. Curl, as Representative from Grant, and Jos. Jeffers, who claims a seat from Clatsop. We shall furnish our readers with a weekly synopsis of the Legislative proceedings. N ote .—Since writing the above, the Senate organized by electing Senator Cochran, of Lane, President ; Syl. C. Simpson, Chief Clerk ; C. C. Rovee, Assistant; R. M. Guerney, Sergeant- at -arms ; J. C. Head, Door-keeper. The House was still balloting for Speaker at last accounts. A Twenty.Ftve Flea. Harper’s Weekly has a long and elaborate argument tn prove Mr. Beech er not guilty, says the Statesman, and through the whole runs a metallic shim mer which is revolting to the common understanding. We are wondering now whether, if the notorious sinner had been some village preacher—a six hundred dollar evangelist, for in- tance—whether that great paper would have been so metaphysical, inge nious and laboriously logical ? We fear not—nay, we do believe that the un scrupulous and vindictive publishers would 9et their pictorial dog on him, if there had been any chance of creat ing a little/miserable but productive laughter. What if the reverend adul terer had been a Catholic priest ? or even an Irishman ? The harvest in Eastern Oregon is entirely over. The yield in that sec tion is less than last year. Mrs. Grace Bennett, of San Fran cisco, has just finished a superb oil painting of the noted racer, Thad Stevens. Salem is having a lively time this week—Supremo Court, legislators, woman suffragists, Grangers—all have to board and lodge. Coos Bay is represented as being filled with salmon and salmon trout— the latter being very easily caught with hook and line. A petition to the Legislature is be ing circulated in Coos County asking aid towards the construction of a rail road from the navigable waters of the Coquille to those of Coos Bay. Many aspirants to small offices are congregating at the State Capital. A large majority of these unfortunate and deluded fellows will be wending their w’ay homeward ere long poorer if not wiser men. The Portland Museum is daily in creasing its store of curiosities. The last addition to its cabinet of wonders is the smoke-stack of the fiery Fur nace in w’hich the Children of Israel were subjected to a futile chlorination. The twelve trial jurors of the Unit ed States District Court in Portland is the largest, heaviest, and oldest jury ever summoned in Oregon—72 feet long, weight, 2,097 pounds, and the combined ages foot up 582 years. Seeing that all the pioneers who came here by sea have had their reun ions, the Alta suggests a reunion of those who crossed the plains, and pro poses mule steak and bean soup as the bill of fare. This idea is as good as it is original. At Portland, September 12th, wheat was coming in more freely, exports having advanced the price to $1.50 per cental. Five vessels were then loading. The rain has caused consid erable damage to grain in Washing ton Territory. SPECIAL NOTICES. Charles Hotel, in Pittsburg, for eight or nine weeks, is convalescing slowly and expects soon to be able to start for the Pacific coast. Brigham Young is about to take an other wife. It is an Irish woman this time, as he has never indulged in a I woman of that nationality and is am bitious to have every country repre sented in his household. If she don’t; make it lively for him we will lose our guess. FRANCO-A M E RIC AN JOHN BILGER, OBSTACLES TO MARRIAGE. The result of the election in Ohio to determine whether the Constitution framed last winter should be ratified is a defeat of the new instrument by a very large majority. The vote was light, and it does not appear that any earnest effort was made by the friends of the new Constitution to secure its ratification, while it may be presum ed that the railroad companies, whose interests are unfavorably affected by Some of its provisions, used their ut most exertions to defeat the measure.
