The suit of Edward K. Winship, of
New York, for divorce from his wife,
Caroline XVinship, was heard recently
before Judge Donohue. In relation to
his marriage, Mr. Winship says that
while he was in the navy, one Butler,
his .shipmate*, a Philadelphian, went
home and was married, and invited
him to his house. He went there one
Saturday, and the next day accompa­
nied them to Germantown and was
introduced to the person from whom
he was seeking a divorce. lie con­
tinues :
I don’t know how it was, or any­
thing about our getting back to the
hotel, but the next morning, Monday,
when 1 awoke, I found the lady with
me. She said she was my wife, that
we wen* married the afternoon previ­
ous, and as a proof, she showed me
her marriage certificate. I sprang out
of the room at once, for I was only a
“youngster,” and hastily started on
for New York, and before daylight on
Tuesday morning I was outside of
Sandy Hook.
It w as Butler who put up the job.
After an absence of about two months
1 went back to Philadelphia and found
my wife at the hotel. Whenever my
duties permitted 1 visited her, and
sometimes was absent for months.
She had a child born about a year af­
ter our marriage. In the Spring of
1872 she went to Europe and return­
ed in the Fall, and again crossed the
ocean in the Spring of 1873. I have
not seen her since April, 1873, and
don’t want to see her again.
1 went to Europe last Fall, and I
suppose she must have heard it
through the papers, for she left there
before my arrival. She has the cus­
tody of the child, but I have made ap­
plication for the care of my daughter.
1 don’t know how we came to be mar­
ried before I’d known her two hours,
and I have never-been able to find out
whether her name was Bateman, or
Beckman, or Bachman.
P rotection for H omixtead S et ­
tlers .—A Washington dispatch of
March 3d contains this:
The Land Committee have been in­
formed that professional land specula­
tors have engaged many men to pro­
cure for them titles both on pine lands
and agricultural lands, and that thou­
sands of acres are now held by them
after such sham has been shown up by
different proceedings. In a limited
degree such abuses have grown up un­
der the present Homestead Law’. To
correct these frauds, to protect those
who want to make homes, to prevent
frauds on the Government, to tiring
under Improvement the public lands
and to add to the wealth of the States
and the Nation, is the only object of
the present land bill. It repeals the
pre-emption laws, except that it allows
inchoate titles under them to be com­
pleted according to their provisions.
It also substitutes for the present
Homestead Law an entirely new one,
retaining all of the best features of the
existing law and adding others that
the law seems to require. It does not
interfere With the soldiers’ homestead
features of the present law. It re­
quires actual settlement and cultiva­
tion for five years, after which, on
due proof thereof, the settler can ob­
tain a title to 160 acres of land, the
whole cost of which will be $10 on the
entry of the land and $8 on the final
proof. If, however, a settler wishes
to obtain a title earlier than five years,
he can do so at the end of eighteen
months on payment of the price of the
land. The committee have thought
that eighteen months of settlement
would make such an improvement as
would keep the land under cultivation
thereafter. The provision exempting
pine lands was struck out lieforethe pas­
sage of the bill. It is the intention of
the committee to report a special bill
providing for the sale of timber lands.
