S ave the S lops —At nearly every
fariner'-' back door, and sometimes the
front one, we see several square yards
bare and muddy from slops being
thrown there. Many think the reason
vegetation does not flourish there is
because the slops, suds and water are
poisonous; but if they take the trouble
to dig up a little of the soil they will
find it black, rich and loamy; it is be
cause of the constant wet that vegeta
tion is killed. These slops, and es
pecially suds in which clothing or parts
of the body have been washed, or dish
water, or scrubbing water, are excellent
fertilizers. Nothing is better to water
around shrubs, vines, trees, or sprinkle
on lawns, than these same wasted slops
that now make such unsightly blotches
near kitchens doors. Learn that all
refuse is valuable, even if you have
only land enough to “swing a cat in.”

One day I noticed a iloek of eleven
pure bred Crevecceur chickens very bad
with what is generally called “gapes.” I
I remarked to the man that he would
not have many chickens out of that lot.
“Oh ! never mind,” said he, “1 have
got a cure for them from a neighbor
woman, which is a common half-penny
tallow candle melted and mixed into
about a quart of oatmeal stir-about.”
The remedy was resorted to, and the
Crevecmurs have every one recovered
and grown into finely developed chick
ens. I have since tried this cure, with
invariable success, with Brahma, Dork

—It is stated that by a careful analysis
it has been found that apples contain
a larger amount of phosphorus, or
brain food, than any other fruit or
vegetable, and on this account they
are very important to sedentary men
who work their brains rather than
their muscles. They also contain the
acids which are needed every day,
especially for sedentary men, the action
of whose liver is sluggish, to eliminate
effete matters, which, if retained in the
system, pnxluce inaction of the brain,
and indeed, of the whole system, caus
ing jaundice, sleepiness, scurvy and
troublesome diseases of the skin.

COUGHS, HOARSENESS, INFLUENZA,
Sore throat, colds, whooping cough, croup,
liver complaint, bronchitis, asthma, bleed

throat, lungs and chest, are speedily and
permanently cured by the use of
Dr. V> ¡star’s Balsam of Wild Cherry.
This well-known preparation does not dry
up a cough and leave t he cause behind, as is
the case with most medicines, but it loosens
and cleanses the lungs and allays irritation,
thus removing the cause of the complaint.

briefly as follows :
It is a first-rate newspaper. All tho news
of the day will be found in it, condensed
when unimportant, at full length when of
moment, and always presented in a clear,
intelligible, and interesting manner.
It is a first-rate family paj>er, full of enter
taining and instructive reading of ev<>ry
kind, but containing nothing that can otlend
the most delicate and scrupulous taste.
It is a first-rate story paper. The liest
talesand romances of current literature are
carefully selected and legibly printed in its
pages.
It is a first-rate agricultural paper. The
most frosh and instructive artiMes on agri
cultural topics regularly up]>car in this de
partment.
It is an independent political paper, be
longing to no party and wearing no collar.
It tights for principle, and for tin* election of
the best men tootlice. It especially devotes
its energies to theex|»sure of the great cor
ruptions that now weaken and disgrace our
country, and threaten to undermine repub
lican institutions altogether. It has no fear
of knaves, and asks no favors from their
supporters.
It reports the fashions for the ladies and
the markets for tho men, especially the cat
tle-markets, to which it pays particular at
tention.
Finally, it is thecheapest paper published.
One dollar a year will secure it for any sub
scriber. It is not necessary to get up a club
inorder to have THE WEEKLY Sl’N at
this rate. Any one win» sends a single dol
