XVt* don’t like to begin an infantile re bellion just to force y«iu to take us ; besides our first and last motto is, “Let us have a piece.” W. W. F. JOHN* HII’I’I.E-Vf Iii a correspondence to the Pittsburg (Pa.) Leader of November 4th, we find the following in relation to Oregon’s Senator: Butler still loves to talk of its John M. Hippie, who has made such a sen sation as bigamous United States Sen ator from Oregon. It is the favorite subject of conversation by the fireside. “John was a smart fellow, but a bad ’un,” says nearly everybody. It has been the boast of Senator Mit ’hell-IIipplc that in spite of all the scant! tlous facts that have coine out about him, people of his old home be lieve and trust in him. This is not so. I have taken pains to talk with the people her«*, and find that only a few lawy«*rs here, former intimates of Hip pie, have any sympathy lor him what ever. I discovered to-day another chapter in the dismal history of John Mitchell- II ipple. In an interview between Miss Sadie lloon, at Franklin, with your correspondent, she said that her hus band cruelly abused her during their married life. I also discovered that the date of Hippie’s divorce from his wife was not until 1869, instead of 1867. In 1862, after deserting the school teacher with whom he ran away from Butler, he married a Miss Mattie E. Price. This would make him living in bigamy for several years. In proof of all this I have found the record of a case in the Criminal Court, where Mrs. lli|»p!e had brought action against her husband for assault and battery. The information charged him with striking her and brutally abusing her. The cnse was not de fended, but arranged by some sort of a compromise. He can never lx» proceeded against in Oregon for bigamy, as under the State laws the statute of limitation has expired. .Mr. lloon, father of the once Mrs. Hippie, lives near here, and is a most respectable farmer. He confirms his «laughter’s story in every, particular. If the Senate want evidence it can lie furnished then abundantly, and if the word of some of the leaders of the Senate is’to be taken the Senatorial days of Mitchcll-llipple are already numbered.
