are extremely brackish, almost as much
so as the waters of the sea. Olmstead
was told that fish altounded in the
lake, but what varieties he did not
learn. Ducks and geese and gulls
fairly swarmed over and around the
lake.
The hills around were generally des
titute of timber, but covered with a
splendid growth of bunch gras«. The
entire country through which they
passed after leaving Lost river was a
splendid range, on which but few cat
tle or horses or sheep have as yet I
grazed. Some parts of the country,
and particularly some of the mountain
sides, are pretty rocky, but still the
rockiest portions are covered with a
rich growth of bunch grass.
