SETTLE UP,
Narrender of the Mottoes Requested.
The Governor of Oregon, says the
News, properly requested the General
Government to turn over to the State
of Oregon those Modoes now held by it,
who are under indictment by the
State Court for murder. The request
was matte some time since, but the de
lay of the Government to act upon it
is easily explained. The President is
at Long Branch, and thither Secretary
Belknap has been compelled to go to
advise with his superior in the prem
ises. The State will await with pa
tience in the confident expectation
that the President will finally l»e
found ; that his convenience will per-
mit him to consider and decide upon
the matter, and that in the course of
events justice will be (lone in the
premises. In the meantime it is to
be hoped that the business of Secre
tary Belknap’s office will not l>e seri
ously effected while that officer is
prosecuting his expedition to the Pres
idential person.
The State Fair,
We have received a poster by mail
announcing the next State Fair. From
it we learn that the Fair will be held
at the Fair Grounds, Salem, commenc
ing on Monday, October the 6 th, and
will continue six days. This year the
State Agricultural Society offers gold
and silver medals in addition to pre
miums amounting to over $10,000, coin
for meritorious exhibitions. Rev.
Thomas Condon, of the Dalles, will de
liver the annual adress, which will take
place on Thursday, October 9th. It is
hoped and expected the State Fair of
1873 will be a gigantic success, and
the 8oclety has spared no pains to
malto it such. Prices for admission
are fixed as follows: Six-day tickets,
$2 00; membership badge, $3 00; one
day tickets, $1 00; ladies, and children
under 12 years of age, will be admit
ted free of charge.
But tew copies of this beautiful Chromo
