THE MODOC W AR
GENERAL NOTES AND NEWS,
ACCIDENTAL TALK.
The chief blunder in regard to the dis
graceful Peace Commission was its ap
pointment. After that, the next blunder
was in prolonging its existence when it
was perceived that it could do no good.
Senators Kelly and Corbett and Rep
resentative Slater voted against the infa
mous bill giving increased pay to the
members of the Forty-second Congress,
and Messrs. Corbett ami Kelly refused
to receive the same, after the bill had
V an B remer ’ s R anch , March 22d.—
Generals Canby and Gillem, with Col.
Biddle’s cavalry returned from a scout
to the lava bed yesterday. They were
met on the bluff by Indians, who called
out from below for one man to come
down and talk to them. Dr. Cabaniss
went down, and the Indians said that
Capt. Jack wanted to see Generals Canby
and Gillem. Cabaniss arranged an in
terview, and the officers went down, ex
pecting to meet Capt. Jack and Schon-
chin, at this purely accidental meeting.
Instead, they met Capt. Jack, Curly
Headed Doctor and Sear-laced Charley.
It appeared at once that there was some
misapprehension, the I ndians supposing
the General sought the interview, when
the reverse was the case, consequently
the talk was dull, the Indians reticent
ami sullen. It amounted to this—that
Capt. Jack wanted the troops to go home,
and he go to his eamp on Cost river, mid
then he would be a good Indian. Evi
dently Jack was under restraint, he talk
ing only in monosyllables, and little at
that. He said if any one wanted to talk
with him, or give him anything, to come
to the lava bed to do so. From all the
talk, it seems that his terms of peace are
amnesty for the past, and a home on
Lost river. Jack was invited to come
out and have a talk with his men, but
he refused, saying he had no horse, and
when one was ottered him, he evaded the
matter. Others were invited to come,
but refused, after they were promised
protection and safe return. Jack would
not answer whether Mary bore the Gen
eral’s last message, in fact would talk
but little on anything. The result of the
interview was far from satisfactory to
those who desire peace.

SATURDAY MORNING, MARCH 29, 1S7
THE PEACE COMMISSION FARCI:
Another recruit has been added to the
Peace Commission, Rev. E. Thomas, of
Petaluma, Cal., having been appointed,
vic» Judge Rosborough, who don't seem
to want any more of the peace humbug
“in his’n.” Considerable difficulty seems
to have been experienced in getting these*
Commissioners to “stick.” First Jesse
Applegate pronounces the Commission
“an expensive blunder,’ and resigns
Then Mr. Case, having arrived at the
same conclusion, goes home* in disgust.
Then Judge* Rosborough, of Yreka, is
appointed ; luit a brief experience* is suf
ficient to satisfy his curiosity, and then
he “thioVs up the sponge.” Meanwhile
Dr. Wadsworth, of Yreka, is urged to
accept an appointment, but he positively
reftHe; s. Then comes the appointment
of T. ] B. Odeneal, who promptly begs to
be excused, recommending the appoint-
ment of L. S. Dyar in his place, which
is accordingly done. Lastly comes the
appointment of Rev. Thomas. Who
next, and what next? But Meacham,
glorious, mullet-headed Meacham, sticks
to it like a hound dog to a pot of cold
mush. So long as the thing pays him
ten dollars a day, you don't catch him
resigning—not much.
I»y the way, it has recently leaked out
from Washington, that Meacham was
appointed upon the express condition
that he* was to go into the Lava Bed and
talk with the Indians. In other words,
had he not given the pledge to go into
the Lava Bed, he never would have been
allowed to handle* any of the* ten dollars
aforesaid. This accounts for his ostenta
tious announcement, on his arrival at
Yreka, that lie considered Capt. Jack to
be an “honorable man.” But Mr. Meach-
am, upon his arrival at the front, con-
eluded it would not bo good policy for
him to go into the Lava Bed—cause
why? If he did, the ten dollar business
ess
might be brought to a sudden termina
tion. When the Indians surrender to
the military, or evacuate the Lava Bed,
then Meacham may probably go into it,
but not before.
