WORMS IX IIORSKS
Intestinal worms are parasites which I
«levelop themselves in all the domestic
animals, each, however, possessing its >
own varieties. The presence of worms I
in the digestive tube is marked at first,
by an increasing appetite, but the ani-|
mal, notwithstandingthe quantity of food
which he consumes,falls off’in condition;
his coat is rough, and is not shed at. the
ordinary time ; there isan annoying itch
ing, which causes the horse to rub his
upper lip against the manger or on the
wall: sometimes there is considerable
itching almut the rectum, which is indi
cated by the horse rubbing his tail or
rump against anything within reach.
The symptoms mention«*«! are such as
would cause one to suspect the existence
of worms, but it is only when these ap-

that we can speak with certainty on the
nature of the disease. At a later ]>erio«1,
and especially when the worms have de
veloped in groat numbers, the symptoms
are very much aggravated, and the horse
becomes emaciated an«l sutlers occasion
ally from colicky pains, the flank is tuck
ed up, the inside of the eyelids are pale,
he walks with difficulty, and a fatal ter
mination sometimes ensues. A dose of
Aloes (four or six drachms) may be giv
en, which has often the effect of expelling
worms without having recourse to further
treatment. If this fails, divide six ounces
ofiron^tilings'among twelve balls, and
give one every morning until they are
finished, and then give a «lose of Aloes,
which’will cause the expulsion of any
worms which remain in the horse's in
testines.— S'-otCxh Fttrmtr.
