P ersonal —Mr. J. T. Glenn arrived from
San Francisco, where he has been for I
some time. We are glad to see that he
has recovered from his late sickness, and
looks hale and hearty as ever.
W ood W anted .—Those of our sub
scribers who desire to pay their subscrip
tion to the T imes in wood are requested
to bring soon, as cold weather is fast ap
proaching.
N ew S ign .—The millinery store of
the Misses Kent has been ornamented
with a beautiful new sign this week—the
work of Messrs. Peacock & Westrop,
which is quite complimentary to their
skill.
D eath of a P ioneer .—Mr. Baldwin
Sills, Senior, of Butte Creek, died on the
25th inst., at the ripe old age of 72. He
was one of the first settlers of this valley,
and was esteemed and respected by all
who knew him.
B all at P hœnix .—A ball was given I
at Phœnix on Thursday evening last, by
Daniel Iievenburg. The Jacksonville
String Band was in attendance, as also
were a number of ladies and gentlemen
from this place.
H og K illing .—Our enterprising
friend, John Orth, commenced butcher
ing hogs this week. He has a lot of fine
larders on hand, and contemplates put
ting up a large quantity of bacon, hams,
lard, etc., and he knows exactly how to
do it, too.
T he F reight S till C omes .—Our
merchants are still receiving heavy quan
tities of goods, and by the time the
freighting season closes, which is not far
distant, they will be able to fill all whole
sale and retail orders for the next six
months.
T he C ircus .—M’lle Jeal & Co.’s circus
again visited this place anti gave a jier-
formance on Tuesday evening last. The
performance was not as good as their
exhibition at this place in June last, and,
not having been properly advertised, was
not as well attended.

T erm .—The following is a synopsis of
the proceedings of this term :
In the absence of H. K. Hanna, Esq.,
District Attorney, James D. Fay was ap
pointed District Attorneyfor the term.
The following named gentlemen were
drawn upon the Grand Jury : Wm. M.
Evans, Alex. White, Nelson Johnson,
Joseph Kemper, Oscar Ganyard, Frank
Bryham, James Turner.
The Grand Jury returned the Court
but one true bill—an indictment for as
sault with a deadly weapon against An
tone Joseph—and upon the second day of
the term were discharged.
T h « M elancholy D ays H ave C ome , i
—The appearance of the skies and the
rainy and stormy weather indicate that
winter is at hand. We hope that the
rains will be abundant.
A ttention ! —Let the people of Jack
sonville remember that on Monday next
an important election will take place.
In pursuance to an order issued by the
Board of Trustees, the vote of the people
will be taken upon the propriety of vot
ing a tax of S10,000 for the purpose of
furnishing the town with a water supply
in case of fire. In view of the terrible
calamities that so often befall cities and
towns, it is an important matter for our
people, and some steps should long since
have been taken to provide against this
devouring element. We have sufficient
evidences of its necessity, and our citi
zens should by all means come to the res
cue and vote for the affirmative of a
measure so essential to their interest.
I mproving .—Mr. Ed. Magruder in
forms us that his son, who has been ly
ing quite critically ill, is now improving
under the auspices of Dr. Chapin, who
has attended him. Mr. Magruder ex
presses himself as being highly gratified
at the Doctor’s management of the case.
As it is among the first calls the Dr. has
had since his arrival among us, we hope
it an auger of his future success.
We are also gratified to hear that Mrs.
Louis Solomon, who was seriously injur
ed some time ago, by being thrown from
a wagon, is recovering.
