The following we take from the 8. F.
Bulletin of Sept. 15th. It is from the
Business Agent. pen of Mr. Hugh Small, a gentleman of
culture, who has recently visited this sec
tion of country:
J acksonville , Aug. 31, 1871.
The great canyon at the head of the
Umpqua Valley south is a marvelous
work of nature. It is at least ton miles
long, and the mountains on each side, ail
the way, average some hundreds of feet
high, heavily timbered on the highest
point. The road is very narrow in some
places, the inclines are steep and precipi
tous, but good horses and a competent
driver gives an assurance of safety. I
passed through this canyon by moon
light ; it presented an aspect of wild, na
tural boldness and grandeur that was sol
emn and impressive.

ed me in treating Dr. Greenman in his last
sickness, allow me to say that we fre
quently told Dr. Greeman’s many friends
that we considered him convalescent, and
that unless something unforseen occurred
he would get well; and as he died of un
foreseen perforation of the intestine, an
explanation is necessary, which cannot
be better done than “Wood’s Practice of
Medicine” does it on page 341, vol. I,
fifth edition, which is as follows :
“There is occasionally a fatal termina
tion of this disease (Enterie or Typhoid
Fever) of a peculiar character which it is
necessary to notice. The patient is sud
denly seized, without any premonitions of
danger, perhaps in the midst of convales
cence, with violent pains in the abdomen,
which is occasionally tender to the touch.
Hometimes there is no pain, but only ten
derness. The knees are drawn up, and
the face assumes an anxious, and even
a ghastly expression ; rigors, an exceed
ingly frequent, and contracted pulse.
Obstinate vomiting, and constipation are
frequent symptoms. A collapse of the
circulation of the surface precedes death,
Which usually takes place in a day or
two, though life is sometime prolonged
for a week. The cause of these symp
toms Is a perforation of the intestine and
the escape of its liquid contents, produc
ing inflamation of the peritoneum. It is
more frequently the mild than the ag*
grivated cases of the disease that are lia
ble to this accident. It occurs at variable
periods in the complaint, having been no
ticed as early as the twelfth day and as
late as the fortieth.”
This description of Dr. Wood so fully
answers Dr. Greennian’s agonizing
symptoms for the last two days of his
life that ail of his nurses and watches
will immediately recognize them as ap
plicable to his case.
