A R emarkable R elic .—Mr. Andy
Davidson brought into our office a gun
possessing an interesting history. It is
an old English fowling piece, one hun
dred and fifty years old, and is in a good
state of preservation. The barrel is four
feet long, and the angles and ornamental
¡»arts of it are worn smooth by old age.
The stock is of black walnut and extends
half way up the barrel. It is now provi
ded with a percussion lock, but the re
mains of the old pan belonging to the
flint lock is still visible, worn through
and burnt out by continued use. The
barrel is very thin, but safe enough for
use. Mr. Davidson obtained the gun,
while on a recent visit East, from a
worthy old uncle of four score years, who
prized it for the honored memories con
nected with it, and gave it to his
nephew (who is one of our staunchest
Democrats) with the express injunction
that it should not be fired until a Demo
cratic President is elected. His will is
still further : that it is to descend as an
heir-loom as long as the Davidson family
remain true to the immortal principles it
once spoke for. Andy is true to its tra
dition, and promises to rear all the young
Davidsons, who are or may be under his
roof, true to the political faith of his fath
ers. May the proud associations that
cluster around the old gun ever keep
them true to the that faith. Our heart,
too, with the worthy nephew, will revere
the noble old uncle for appreciating and
preserving so precious a relic.
