walk along Pennsylvania avenue, toward
Georgetown, between 5 and (> o’clock in I
the afternoon, with his hands thrust deep
in his breeehes jtoekets, and a very red
face. On arriving in the neighborhood
of Twenty-tirst street he stops at the front
door of a buxom widow, who is employed
in the Treasury Department.
He never
goes beyond that |M»int. The car-con
ductors, the neighbors, the passers-by gen
erally, who have repeatedly seen the j
President come up to that front door,
make all they can out of it ; but it is be
lieved that the willow who lives there
makes more out of it than all of them
put together.
The widow of Pennsylvania avenue is,
however, troubled by a rival at the Jeu
nes House. That rival is the wife of “the
horse educator of the world,” who has a
tent on the avenue, where he performs
equine wonders at prices previously
agreed upon. His wife is also a horse
tamer, and it seems she has thoroughly
brought under the bob-tailed pony of the
White House. A short time since, while
Mrs. Grant was out of town, the General
sent the horse-taming angel of the Jeu
nes House a magniticent bouquet. She
was so elated by the compliment that she
showed the bouquet all round the hotel,
and told where it came from. This made
the ladies at the Jeunes House fearfully
mad. The idea that the president of the
United States would send a bouquet to
“that woman” was too exasperating for
human nature of the feminine gender to .
bear. Of course, the fact was immediate-;
ly blown all over the city, and as a mat
ter of personal protection to the President,
it was stated in a morning paper that the
bouquet had been sent that recipient from
the conservatory of the White House,
without saying who sent it, but leaving
the impression on the reader that it came
from the hands of Mrs. Grant. What
Mrs. Grant said or did about the scandal
has not yet been made public. She has
the sympathies of the community. It is
feared by those who know her intimately
that she will not survive the Presidential
term.

seems to point in her course, on the pres
ent track. We reply : the number of
electoral votes in the coining political
contest is 317. It requires 159 to com
plete a majority. The footings of the
votes of the 17 States known to be relia
ble as Democratic, are 151 ; the footings
of the 11 States, unmistakably Mongrel,
are 72 votes, while then.* are 9 States set
down as doubtful, counting 94 votes. If
the Democracy can carry either Ohio, i
Pennsylvania or Illinois, we are all right, i
If we can carry New Jersey and any oth
er one doubtful State we are safe. If we
can carry Connecticut anil any other one
doubtful State we are “sure pop;” and
finally, the signs are, that enough of the
doubtful vote will be given to the White
Supremacy platform to carry the ticket.
