Love for Humanity. An Act to Protect Litigants. The obligation to cherish a sentiment of affection towards mankind, appears nt the first glance bo difficult a task, that we are usually content to affirm it as n duty, with out making auy special efforts to put it into practice. It is easy to lore our kindred, to be grateful to those who aid us, to honor ge nius and worth ; but to respect all men, to love th® unworthy, and to esteem those of whom we are ignorant, seems bo impractica ble an undertaking, that we shrink from at tempting it. Were this the case, however, it would at once cease to be a duty, as no thing is ever required of us which we caunot perform ; and it is therefore important that the ground of this obligation should be ex amined. It is true that we have no direct control over our affections. No eff >rt of the will can Oompel the hjnrt to love. That emo tion must be involuntary, and its whole value is in its spontaneity. Yet this does not absolve us from tbe obligation. There are duties which, if performed, will so act upon the af fections as to create the love that is due ; and it is in these indirect and but efficient meth ods, that the means of fulfilling this obligu tion are found, lu the family, if love be tween parents and children or brothers and sisters, fails to warm and elevate, it is be eause the duties ure n. t peifoiuied that be long to the various relations of the house hold. Let tbe.-e be conscientiously fulfilled, and the affection which was obstructed by selfishness will fl ,w in rich streams, ecno- bliug every life. So a itb the love that we owe to others, though we cannot by any vo lition call it into existence, yet by carefully observing the duties that belong to the rela tion— whether it be that of a neighbor, friend or fellow citizen—affection will surely follow. Equally does this truth apply to the love we owe to liumauity at large. The bond of union between mm and man is that of mu tual respect, and there are two Courses which, i if carefully observed, will implant within us that respect for every human being which is the foundation of the love we owe to human ity. Gue of these is a consideration of the real greatuess of human nature ; the other a performance of all the acts of kindness and good-will that are within our power. One need of our times is the appreciation of tbe real worth of man. The honor so generally accorded to great men is apt to be at tbe expense of all others, but rightly regarded, these would exalt our estimate of the whole race, as showing some glimpses of the power which exists in it, and may be developed to far greater extent. We , reverence childhood, because it contains the germs of all that is noble in man, and we should likewise honor every man as holding within tbe principle of growth, which iu its further developments so greatly excites our admiration. Tbe sense of duty, the power of .discerning and choosing between the right and wrong, inherent in every man, is the highest faculty of which we can conceive, and may well serve to bind us in a common brotherhood. Before this great and univer sal possession all distinctions of wealth or greatness will fade. Such reflections, if cherished, and carried out, canDot fail to inspire a respect Lr hu manity, that will prove a fruitful source of the love which we owe to our race. But ibere is another and more potent meansuf strengthening that affection ; it consists in active efforts for tbe good of all. Probably there is no one who fully exerts all the pow er be possesses in any direction ; but in the way of benefiting our race, we all come greatly «bort of our possibilities. Those im mediately around us claim our first regard, and the duties of friendship and citizenship bring their own reward. But we also have obligations towards those far removed from us by distance and by character. W here our presence cannot go, our charities may, and the spirit of philanthiopy knows no lim it of space. Especially to those who may seem to have forfeited tbeir claim to our re gard by their misdeeds, do we owe duties, which, if fulfilled, will excite within us the sentiments of compassion, and love. A irtue is a like a ladder, upon wbieb all who are above should Imd a helping band to those below. The spirit ot love for humanity will eDable us to exert a power in raising the fallen or aiding the destitute, that can never be put forth by those who lock down upon them with haughty superiority. This respect and love for humanity will be a great means of developing and improving the race and increasing its happiness.— Public Ledger.
