The word "inspir ation" is less forced when applied to his loftiest poetry than when used of any of his contemporaries. With defects too ob vious to be mentioned, he can yet pierce furthest behind the veil, and embody mos-t efficiently the thoughts and emotions which come to us in our most solemn ami reflective moods. Other poetry becomes tritliag when we are making our inevitable passages through the Valley of the Shad ow of Death. "Wordsworth's alone re tains its power. We love him the more as we grow older and become more deep ly impressed with the sadness and serious ness of life; we are apt to grow weary of his rivals when we have finally quitted the regions of youthful enchantment. And I take the explanation to be that he is not merely a melodious writer, or a powerful utterer of deep emotion, but a true philosopher. His poetry wears well because it has solid substance. He is a prophet And a moralist, as well as a mere inger. The Man Who Was Buried. The story of Sullivan, the man who was buried in a well at Portsmouth Plains, Friday, is exceedingly interesting. Constant intercourse was held with him during the work of rescue, his voice being just audible. He evinced a wonderful courage, saying that lie had a taint glim mer ot light, and repeatedly asking the men to hurry with their work. Every thing went on well, and at 10 o'clock about twenty feet below the surface had been reached. At that hour there was great excitement, as the men were ap parently within a few feet of the arch which had thus far protected the unfor tunate man, who could be faintly heard asking for some more air and saying that the dirt from alxwe was closing around him. Air pipes were brought to the ground and immediately introduced into the opening. At half-past 10 o'clock the workmen reached his head and Dr. Whit tier offered him some stimulant. Sullivan declined and said, 'I am all right." He was at this time enthusiastically cheered and encouraged. Work was continued with the greatest care, blankets being used to protect his head from falling earth, until half-past 11, when an order was given by William E. Marshall, who su perintended the work, for "all hands to stand back and be quiet, and Sullivan came up in a tub which had been used for hoisting out the rocks and sand. Cheer upon etieer rent the air as lit: was lifted out. He shouted himself, and then ran to his house, and up stairs to greet his mother, and the voting woman to w hom he is engaged, and w ho came from Newmarket, havinir received the news that he was dead. The well was just hlty-three teet deep, and MUiivan was buried forty feet under the earth just the smallest aperture affording him air. Two hundred and sixty tubs of stone and dirt were drawn troiu the well in the twelve hours. Mayor Broughton super intended the work in person. Sullivan tells this story of his experi ence: A boy, he says, dropped a dipper in the well, and John Welch, a brother-in-law to Sullivan, knowing that he had been to sea, asked him to go down on the rope of the bucket used for drawing wa ter and secure the dipper for the boy. Sullivan went down on the rope, as sub sequently ascertained by measurement, twenty-eight feet, and then found that the stonework of the well had partially caved in below him. He placed his foot innocently on one of the rocks which had not got out of place, and instantly the stone walls of the well caved all around and above him with a tremendous crash. As soon as he could reeover himself lie found that his right baud was jammed fast, and his rigid leg as well. With his left hand he felt over his head and found that about tfiree inches above his head two large tlat rocks had formed an areli protecting his head. A peaked rock was pressing against his chest, which, with the dirt and sand around his mouth, pre vented him from speaking for about an hour, during which time he could dis tinctly hear the voices above him say t hut lie was dead, ami making preparations to send for a coroner. He heard priest Mc Carthy, of Portland, who happened to be in the neighlmi hood visiting, and came t the spot, say : "John, are you alive'" and for the lir.t time he then spoke and said "Yes." The priest then told him to make an act of contrition and told him he would pray for him. Sullivan says he did the best thing he could in the w ay of devotion under the circumstances, and when the priest told him that he thought he would be takeu out alive, he then had every confidence that he would be. He says the air was very bad until they got the air-pumpat work. Re says he feared that when the trains would come, along the Eastern Railroad, distant only 2,000 feet, the well might cave further, but at no time did he hear a train, although they were constantly passing. He is not bruised, says a Sunday Herald dispatch of Saturday, save only one wrist and a slight abrasion of the skin on his shoul der, but complains some of feeling sore to-day. In reply to a question why he did not take the brandy Dr. Whittier offered him when they readied his head, he said: "If I was to die, I wanted to die a sober man. I did not need any rum courage." Mr. Sullivan is very grateful to all those who saved his life, and can hardly express himself. At Alexandria, Virginia, stands the old church in which Washington used to worship. It was begun in 1H, and con secrated in the year 177;J. The w alls are twenty-two inches in thickness, and the bricks were all brought from England. Two sides of the church are so thickly covered with ivy that the shutters can scarcely be opened, and the stems of the ivy are like young trees. An old style churchyard surrounds it on three sides, the ancient tombstones containing many quaint epitaphs and orthographical puz zles. Withiu, the pews are very straight and high, the one occupied by Washing ton being larger than the others. On one side of the pulpit is a marble tablet sacred to the memory of (Jeorge Wash ington; on the other side, and exactly similar, is one sacred to the memory of R. E. Lee, loth placed there since the war. The Masonic lodge room, in which Washington so many times officiated as Worshipful Master, situated on a street running off from King', is rememlKred by a person who visited it in 1SG2, just be fore the battle ot Antietam, as carefully preserved in all its antique habiliments, including the straight-backed chair and gavel used by Washington. Salt in the Ska. Professor Chap man, of University College, Toronto, has published an interesting paper on the ''purpose" of the saltness of sea-water. After giving reasons why he does not ac cept the usually received opinions, he urges the theory that the object is to regulate evaporation. If any temKrary cause renders the amount of saline mat ter in the sea above its normal value, evaporation goes on more and more slowly. If the value be depreciated by the addition of fresh water in undue ex cess, the evaporating power is the more and more increased. He gives the result of various experiments in reference to evaporation on weighed quantities of or dinary rain-water, and water holding in solution 2. per cent, of salt. The excess of loss of the rain-water, compared with the salt solution was, for the first twenty four hours, 0.54 per cent.; at the close of forty-eight hours, 1.40 per cent., and so on in increasing ratio. The dethronement of a Sultan is nothing new in Turkish history. Ot the thirty-three Sultans of the house of Oth man, of whom Abdul-Aziz was the last, fourteen were not permitted to end their reigns in peace. Four of the fourteen were merely deposed. The other ten were not only dethroned, but murdered or died in prison under suspicious circumstances. SAN FRANCISCO MARKET.
