The Discussion.
Luwt Saturday after dinner, ac
cording to notice, Hon. 0. W. Watts
aud Dr. F. A. Bailer discussed the
Questions Ht issue between tlie two
great political parties which they
represented. The Hillsboro brass
band furnished music for the occa
sion. W. H. Tarker of Cornelius
was elected chairman who called the
meetiug to order when the debate
began. "Watts had one hour and a
quarter, to open and fifteen minutes
to close, while Dr. Bailey had au
hour and a half to answer. The de
bate tbongh long was interesting
and retained the audience until near
the close. The speakers were fre
quently cheered while making their
telling poiuts or eloquent periods.
As usual the partisans of each tho't
that their side won. It is our opin
ion, however, that they were pretty
equally matched. It takes a man to
bandits Dr. Bailey as those who have
tiied him can testify. Dr. Watts is
well posted, however, and made it
interesting work for his opponent.
We took notes and aimed to give a
ftftt'report of the speeches but the
press of other matters crowded it
Ultt.
Court Notes.
Gov. GiblM aud W. D. Hare made
au elaborate defense ia the action
against the Holcombs. The Gover
nor was decidedly buoyant, while
Hire talked a- pathetically ns a wo
man aiid locked on the jury as if he
uctualy loved them.
That was certainly a relevant ques
tion Judge Shattuck put to one of
the witnesses in the above case when
he asked her if she and the defend
ant wire driving sheep on that day;
as well as a capital hit.
The Prosecuting Attorney is the
best looking Portland lawyer attend

The receipts at the gate yesterday Amount

they amounted to abjut $100.
The race to-day was for 3-year olds, mile

A well known horse trainer knocked a
hoodlum down for insulting his wife, and
kicked him while down and knocked him
down when he got up and k-pt on that
way a if he tok an interest in the job.
There was no annual address to-day
as advertised because no speaker was en
gaged. THE EXHIBITION
Is not so great this year as last. Mr.
lie fed did not exhibit his horses at all. "What
is the matter with the man?" is the question.
Mr. Reduiund of Yamhill exhibits a fine
bay horse trotter. S. G. Reed carries off the
palm in Ayrshire and Durham cattle a few
of which we describe as follows: Red roan
Governor a two year-old bull, wired by
Weepiug Willow, which Bold for $1000
weight 2,00d pounds; the Alsium Lord
eight months old, is a fine a heifer a was
ever sired weighs 1,000 pounds; Ilillhurst
Rose, a very fine cow, which with her twins
m-.kea an exhibition of herself. Sheis of the
Ayrshire breed; Pet Gwiune related to
one of the strain which realized buch fabu
lous prices at New York iu 1873; and th
Karl of Lome, a fine young Ayrshire bull,
one of the best ever imported into thiscouu
try. Mr. Reed also exhibits Cotswold and
and Leicester grade of sheep, from Lord
Poe's flock one of England's best breeders;
also a H-month old Ilerksbier hog which
is extra stock. A. Luelling, McEIdowney,
Stewart ,t Sous, and J. C . Hawthorne ex
hibit pure bred and graded cattle. A gen
tleman from California has some fine An
gora goats in the stalls both pure and graded.
This gentleman has located in the county
and has some 100 head of goats iu his tlock.
Robt. Imbrie, Mr. Chalmers and John R.
Po;ter have sheep loth pure and graded.
Geo. Nay lor did not exhibit his sheep this
year owing to the push of harvest. Mr.
Ja;kson of Ja nes' farm had some 11 rah ma
aud Cochin chickens and JJilly Robinson
some handsome Silver Spangled Hamburg
labeled as Golden Spangled" how
ever. T. II. Tongue and others in this
neighborhood could have discounted those
chickens if they hud exhibited,
IN THE PJUI.ICr.
Here there was a marked falling off in en
tries from last year. The vegetables though
few were fine, so with the grains. In the
line of fruits R lt. Inibrie, A. G. Walling
and J. R. Porter have the largest and finest
lots and best in most varieties. E. E. Por
ter monopolies the tiower depaitmeiit, tho
he will have Home competition. We shall
not attempt to describe the needle work de
partr.t. ut. The showing in the art depart
ment was dt eidcil!y kI'th. There was one
quite hamlsome picture from Portland that
was not entered for prize at all. In the
mechanical department several rcuiers and
mowers are exhibited. Mr. Baxter f Hil's
loro exhibited a good act of harness. Jake
Stevenson acts as agent for a new patent
spring bed that makes us feel sleepy to look
at it. The canned fruit displ-iy, a! jel
lies, etc, were quite; meagre as compan d
with last year.
iuet u's circus arrived iit the afternoon
and showed to a fair house in the evening.
In the walking match to-day there were
four eiitiies; one each by Wm. West, Jas.
Scoggin. Win. liigham and Alfred EbWrts.
W.i:. Wist took first premium and Wm.
Bigham second; afterwards the horses were
all ruled out but Wm. Ebberts who took
first money.
Iu the afternoon J. S. Heller of this
place had a valuable watch aud .huin and
$-00 in coin taKcn out of his ockets. The
watch was subsequently found in a show
case connei ted with a thieving game.
THIRD DAT.
The huckster stands and eating honses
are doing a good business. J. L. Thomas
has a lucrative stand on the ttopular corner.
A. Y. Boyce, another Hillsboro citizen has
a stand also. And Mr. Bcatuhamp's hotel
is a success. Mr. MeNutt of Corne
lius has a rtand and II. II. Welch of the
Grove runs a barber shop.
As Mr. We t was running Coggan'a Path
findei on the track he shied throwing the
driver and dashed through the fence, the
crowd, tables, ami T. 11. Hoover' kitchen,
amashing things as he went.
Three gamblers, Isaac Longstreet, J. H.
McDonald and S. P. Howard, were arrest
ed for stealing $23 from Isaac Rutler. They
were tried lcfore Justice Humphreys and
dismissed. Longstreet claimed that he bor
rowed the money of Mr. Rutler. A "cap

Noah Mull of Reedvillo loaned a festive
gambolier $10 and the b. g. lost it of course
and Mr. Mull can say with the poet and
the "ravf u" nevermore. These gentle
men will probably be careful aliont lend
ing their mouey to gamblers hereafter. An
old gentlemen who lives near Di ley loat
considerable money at one of the games.
He borrowed $ KM) of a Director and went
back to get "even" when aaid Director
went in and pulled him out ami made him
hand over the money, aud told him to keep
away from there. The gamblers objected
but that Director told them he would have
them In the jug" in five minutes if they
did not ''dry np" ond they dried.
Queen'a Circus was the Wst that has
been through the country but like all cir
cusea it looked best on paper; coarse, rnl
gar, almost indecent none of the m are fit
places for women and children and per
haps men.
The marshals put a yonng man outside in
the afternoon for cursing and disturbing
the peace. He was intoxicated and swore
vengeance on Parker the chief Marshal.
Last night several fellows who thought
they could run the marshals we-- ejected
from the grounds and peace was restored.
The race to-day was between J. H. Boo
mer's -Billy Nut's and W. G. Scoggin's
Maggie Burton, ' mile and repeat, Billy
Nuts winning both heats.
FOURTH AICD FIFTH DATS.
As our space is limited we will eondena

At evening on Friday scarcely any remains
of the Fair were to be aeen, nearly every
body having left.
The receipts of the Fair are stated in an
other place. Awards of premiums next

Dr. W. II. Saylorof Portland visited the

Two immigmnts from Iowa who hare
