Dress and Oratory.
David Faul Brown was many years the
favorite orator of the Philadelphia bar.
He was an exquisite in dress, believing,
with Buffon, the eminent French natural
ist, who wrote in full dress, that "the
style is the man." hen Mr. lirown ap-
injured in his favorite dress, he wore a j
blue coat with brass buttons, buff vest
and light pantaloons, closely-fitting
gloves, neat boots, and a glossy hat rakish
ly set on his head. When criticised for
his too great fondness for dress, he defend
ed himself by saying "that he had never
known a man to sicak well in clumsy
boots, nor to have a clear mind with
dirty hands and face; that he had known
many a fop that was not a fool, and many
a sloven that was not a Solomon."
There is good sense in the following
words, wherein he gives a philosophy of
dress, ami defends his peculiarity. "A
becoming decency of exterior," he says,
"may not be necessary for ourselves, but it
is agreeable to others; and while it may
render a fool more contemptible, it serves
to embellish inherent worth. It is like
the jMilish of the diamond, taking some
thing, perhaps, from its weight, but add
ing much to its brilliancy and attraction."
lint Mr. Brown was not a mere fop. He
was a graceful orator, a successful lawyer,
and u hard student of literature. Some
of his suggestions are worthy of the at
tention of yoimLj men, especially those
working in :v profession.
"How is it possible you can do so much
business?" asked a friend.
"Because," was the reply of the busy
lawyer, "I have got so much to do."
"But," persisted the friend, "how can
you indulge in poetry and general litera
ture?" Mr. Brown's answer contains the pith
of a volume on self-education and the art
of keeping one's mind fresh.
'Because,'' he replied, "it enables me
to return to my more rugged pursuits
vith great alacrity and renewed strength.
The mind takes its direction from habit.
If you wish to strengthen it, you must
direct it for a time into other channels,
and thereby refresh and improve it. A
mere lawyer is a mere jackass, and has
never the jiowcr to unload himself; where
as I consider the advocate the thorough
ly accomplished advocate the highest
style of a man. He is always ready to
learn and always ready to teach. Horten-
sius was a law ver. Cicero an orator. The
one is forgotten, the other is immortal.1
The Jnrige Silenced.
The yield of milk of Northern dairy
cows is incredible to people in the South,
where cattle are raised mostly for beef
ami hides.
Judge Grant was in Little Rock, Ark.,
in attendance at the Uuited States court.
One morning he saw a farmer with a
slouch hat and a genuine butternut suit,
trying to sell a cow in the market there.
It was a large, long-horned animal, and
the planter was informing a man that the
cow wouiu give iour quarts u. aj, n ieu
well.
Up stepped the judge. "What do you
ask for the cow i"
"About thirty dollars. She'll give five
quarts of milk if you feed her well," re
plied the planter, and he proceeded to
describe her good qualities.
Said the judge, "I have cows on my
farm, not more than half as big as your
cow, which give twenty to twenty-five
quarts of milk a day."
The planter eyed the judge sharply for
a moment as if trying to remember wheth
er lie had ever seen him before or not, and
then asked :
"Stranger, whar do you live?"
"My home is in Iowa."
"Yes, stranger, I don't dispute it. There
was heaps of sogers from Iowa down here
during the war, and stranger, they was
the all-tiredest liars in the whole Yankee
army. Mabbe you mought be an officer
in some of them regiments?"
Thejmlge slid for the court-house.
Humor and Sarcasm. It is not every
one that knows where to joke or how.
Whoever is ignorant of these conditions
had better not joke at all. A gentleman
never attempts to be humorous at the ex
pense of any people with whom he is but
slightly acquainted. In fact it is neither
a good nor a wise policy to joke at any
body s expense; that is to stiy, to make
anybody uncomfortable merely to raise a
laugh. Old Esop, who was doubtless
the subject of many jibes on account of
his humped back, tells the lrogs, "What
was fun to the boys was the death of the
croakers."
A jest may cut deeper than a curse.
Some men are so constituted that they
cannot take a friendly joke in the same
light coin, and will requite it with con
tumely and insult. Never banter one of
this class, or he will brood over your bad
inage long after you have forgotten it,
and it is not prudent to incur any one's
enmity for the sako of, uttering a smart
double entendre or a tart repartee. Rid
icule, at best, is a terrible weapon. Sa
tire, however, when levelled at social
foibles and political evils, has shamed
down more abuses than were ever abol
ished by force or logic.
Not a Gentleman. About a year
ago, while on my way to a city in Ten
nessee, I was seated in a first-class car,
and directly In front of me sat a rough
looking individual, reading a newspaper
and smoking a cigar, seemingly unaware
that smoking was prohibited in that car.
The conductor, passing through, saw him
and said :
"Gentlemen are not allowed to smoke
in this car, sir 1"
The man, coolly taking the cigar out of
his mouth, said :
"I ain't no gentleman, never was one,
and I never expect to be!" and then con
tinued smoking, perfectly at ease. This
cool answer seemed to petrify the con
ductor's tongue, for after contemplating
the smoker in silent amazement for a few
moments, he walked off, and bothered
him no more about the rule against
smoking.
A Striking Anecdote. Charles XII.,
King of Sweden, drank sometimes to ex
cess, so as even to disturb his reason. In
one of his drunken bouts he lost the re
spect which was due to the Queen, his
mother. She retired to her chamber,
overwhelmed with grief, and remained
there on the following day. As she did
not make her appearance, the King in
quired the cause. This being told, he
took a glass of wine in his hand, and went
to the Queen's room. "Madam," said he
to her, "I have learned that yesterday, in
my cups, I forgot myself towards you.
I come to ask your pardon; and to pre
vent a recurrence of such a fault I drink
this glass to your health; it shall be my
last during my life." He kept his word,
and from that day he never tasted wine.
A wife's bosom should be the tomb of
her husband's failings, and his character
far more valuable in her estimation than
his life.

THE XEW AMERICA V SBWIXO MACHIXE IX
CAL1FOKSIA.
Whether it was Tom Hood's pathetic "Song
of the Shirt," or the subsequent wail that
went up from the exhausted female seams
tresses all over the world, that precipitated
the invention of the sewing machine, is not
known; but it certainly Is a fact that the ini.
proveinents constantly" being made in sewing
machinery are truly marvelous. The princi
ple of sewing bv machinery has been in prac
tical operation for over a quarter of a century,
and its proper application has been a subject
which has engrossed the attention of many
a master mechanical mind. It is not a matter
for wonder, therefore, that the improvements
thus far made have well-nigh reached infec
tion. That such Is the case cannot be denied
when we witness the crowning points i f me
chanical genius as developed in the New
American Sewing Machine, a few of which
are supplied with self-threading shuttles, the
first and only one the world bus ever seen.
The self-threading shuttle not only saves
time and vexation to the operator, but it is a
great source of relief to those persons whose
eyesight is impaired. Its simplicity of action,
a natural result of having but few working
parts, is another inestimable advantage the
machine being always ready for work. The
self-threading shuttle requires no attention
to little holes common to other machines,
and is complete a simii as the bobbin is
placed in it, a desideratum that can only be
appreciated by a person who has Ik-cii an
noyed w ith the use of the ordinary machines.
Although comparatively new to California
i lie ,vtw American Sewing Machine has been
in the Eastern States for the oast ten years.
where it ha met with the most flattering
success in sales, and Ihe most fulsome praise
from everybody. The machine lias been in
troduced here by E. II. Harrington, who has
established n branch office of the company
at No. 124 Fifth street, San Francisco, to sup
ply a want long felt in the city and State.
In the East the machine has withstood the
test of the severest criticisms, md in each
case has come out of the buttle victorious.
Ihe ease and lightness with which they run
their unparalleled sinii-licit v and their many
valuable and iintortaiit improvement-, are all
qualities which at once commend them to
the serious attention of all who make use of
a sewing machine. The New American Sew
ing Machine is superior in all its parts, is
m tuuiuciuicil Ii out the best material that th:
country can produce, and possesses so many
peculiar advantages over ull other pieces of
iikc meeii.ini-m lliul it cannot fall to secure
a large patronage from the public. Parties
who contemplate purchasing a sewing ma
chine, and w ho desire one that the smallest
child can successfully manipulate and com
prehend, wilt do well to call upon Mr. liar
rington, at No. 124 Fifth street, and examine
into this unparalleled invention. We can
commend the New American Sewing Ma
chine to the public on the volumes of testi
monials it has received in the Eastern States

No person visiting the Mechanics' Institute
r air, now being held in San Francisco, w ill
lau to notice ihe splendid display of the justly
celebrated Verba Buena Bitters. M
Williams & Co. still adhere to the plan of
giving away their medicine to every comer,
iciying upon uieir good etlects to bring back
a customer. The fact that they have not
Ih.ch able to manufacture fast eiiotiirh to till
their orders, is good evidence that the Yerba
