Vote For the Best Men-
Next Tuesday the State election
takes place, when the people must
decide what candidates for the sev
eral offices in the county and Stato
shall serve or abuse them. And.
representing tho interests cf the
people of this county particularly,
we would urge, especially in the
mere county offices, that men should
Tote for he best men. Only this
much can bo asked for party nnd
party priciples in the county, and
that is that where von have a man
ou your party ticket who is as good
or is about as good, as his opponent,
then you should voto for him. But
when you iind that any candidate on
your ticket is immoral or pooilv
qualified as compared with his op
ponent you commit a vital error a,
great sin, we think, if you vote for
him.
You talk bitterly of Grant's and
Buchanan's administrations; you
feel the disgrace of tho corruptions
of our government, which have even
startled, if not astounded, the em
pire? of the old world; you condemn
the political rings that run our State
and National politics, and even the
primaraies; and yet you vote for the
dummies foisted upon you by the
rings and perpetuate the riug power
ia State and Nation. It is you, Dem
ocrats, and you, Republicans, that do
these things, and all in the name of
party! And while you coutinue to
do this you should kep your mouth
fore.'er shut when tho gamblers,
drunkards, whore-mongers and put
ty men that you elect to ofiice steal
the public monoy, sell their votes
and influence to insatiate corpora
tions, corrupt public and private
morals, and disgrace the Nation.
"We make this appeal to your bet
ter judgment your manhood. "We
ask vou to rise above mere partv
prejudice for once, aye, forever!
and vote for the best men. "We shall
not attempt to point you out the
best men but leave that to your
judgment, as such selections by us
might lead you to misunderstand
our motives. All we ask is, that you
vote for the best men.
Tho Canvass.
The canrass in this coun ty is con
ducting quite pleasantly to all par
ties. The candidates for the Legis
lature do the speaking, tho rest at
tending to let tho people see how
good looking they are. Mr. Iiich
avdaon does not propose to attend
tko canvass outside of his own dis
trict. Mr. Gault cannot take a part
as he is teaching the public school
here and of course cannot leave that.
Mr. Denny furnishes most of the
fun in the discussions. Messrs,
Watt and Ilandley are the leaders in
debate. There-aro no questions at
issue between the two sets of candi
dates, which makes the discussion
decidedly tame. The great benefit
of the canvass is that it will call out
a heavier vote than there would have
been otherwise, which vwll pay for
the trouble. The gre it desideratum
now seems to be to get the people to
vote. It will bo found that those
who stay away from the polls aro
generally honest and substantial cit
Z9n3 while the transiaut aadimai or
al classes always vote.
Send in the Election News,
Will some one of our subscribers
at each precinct pleaso send to us as
early as possible exaot reports of
the election next Monday? We will
wait until the Wednesday evening
train for election news.
H. W. Scott, one of the delegates
chosen by by the Stato convention
to attend tho National Republican
Convention, which convenes at Cin- j
cinati on the 14th of June, started !
East on the last steamer.
What Has Changed?
Communicated.
Two years ago tho people- cf
Washington county made up their
minds that they could no longer
stand the trickery and impositions of
the existing party organizations and
accordingly took a new departure.
The politicians were quick to see
how tho matter would end and wcro
soon found shouting in the lead for
reform. It was then "Resolved
that as farmers, mechanics and la
boring men, we cut ourselves loose
from all party obligations and rally
under a banner broad enough to em
brace all who favor just laws and op
pose cliques, rings, combinations of
monopolies, extravagance, and dis
regard of economy in county, State
and Nation."
Upon that broad platform were
found many of the most persistent
aspirants for office. Some of them
obtained the prize, others less fortu
nate "cut themselves looso" agiin
and got up another reform which did
not work well, nnd then they quietly
slipped back into the party fold,
some of them now boast of bad faith
with their "confusiouists."
I desire your space at this time
only to ask what has changed in the
political situation that any man who
put his hand to that declaration of
Independence should now bo a par
tisan, except in a few cases when
there is an cfii.'e in sight for self or
friend. The same corruption and
extravagance disgraces the nation
and tho State. The samo unscru
pulous men control party destiny
in the county and Stato. Let everv
man recall the pust for l.imstlf and
bo will bo satisfied that while the
principle of Independent voting has
done a great deal of good already,
it has only made a commencement
on the errors and abiue.s to be cor
rected. A speaker at Beaverton londjy
srid that the fees of officer had been
reduced, and seemed to think that
there w;is no more woik for Inde
pendents. Lot me call attention to
the fact that the men who accuse one
another of raising those fees four
years ago, are now controlling the
Ilcpublican party and are attempting
to obtain control of the Legislature
again; perhaps for the same purpose.
There m work for the Idepeud
ents to do and there will be work as
Jong as any one of those politicians
remains alive who got his ideas ot
polities under tho old i lea that "to
tho victors belong the spoils"
VI DI.
From An Idsneniont.
EpitorIndei-exdest: The election
is close at hand. The people of
Washington county will bo called
upon to do what? Let us pause and
think, and be honest with ourselves.
There are two political parties before
you. One is tho old wing of the
Republican party, the other is com
posed of persons who have previous
ly belonged to the Republican and
Democratic parties. Nov., let us see
what has caused this mixture, as
some call it. Is it because the two
great political parties aro pure, hon
est and working for the interests of
the people; or is it on account of the
corruption that exists in the rings of
both parties that has brought about
the present state of affairs? I think
that every honest man must admit
that the reasons for an Independent
move originated from tho fact that
both political parties had become
corrupt. Now the question arises,
what has tho Republic tn party done
to redeem it, and what excuse can
independent men make for support
ing it, if it has not done anything to
redeem it? elf. Then our duty isplaiu:
There are just as good reasons for
supporting an Independent move
now as there was two years ago.

Uon't "Swap.""
It is reported that there will be
some "swapping" of votes on candi
dates in this county next Monday.
Wo hepe it will rot be done. The
prac tice is not honorable. If you have
a choice, vote it, and do not sell it,
though you can make votes tor some
one else you more particularly wish to
elect. Sacrifice no good man by this
plan in order to wreak personal or
political revenges, for that would he
puerile and unworthy of the man
hood and high aims of the franchise.
Vote for good men if you know they
will be beaten and do not corrupt
the suffiage by dishonorable "swap
ping." m
