Mr. and Mrs. trim were at the festival the other eveuing. Mrs. Criiu waa ra diant, but Mr. Crim bore a faint appear ance of gloom, heightened (owew hat by the bareness of bis uppur lip. We no ticed this bareuesa at once, aud at the same time received a aignilicant glance from Mr. Crim, which we readily uuUer stood. Several year auo Mrs. Crim had com to ua with sore trouble upon ber heart a very sore trouble iudeed, for one so young, and but shortly marneu. Air. Ciiin's trouble waa Mr. Criiu's mustache. It was when they first began to "keep company" that this mustache started. Criiu. like all young men, felt that his whole future depended on the growth of the hair, and Jeptte her pleading to cut it off, he refused, tie uiu uoi uuuui mat she waa in earnest, but he knew better than she that should his lip be shaved, her love must necessarily die out. Love will live loiiircr on one mustache than on all other things combined. After they were married she atrtiin renewed her entreaties, but it was without avail. Crim loved his wife, and although he now held her by a legal tie, yet he wanted to keep bur heart all to himself. So she had come to us with her trouble and wanted to know what to do. 'But a mustache is generally consid ered an ornameut, wo said. "So is an ear-ring," said she, "or a pair of vases, but who wauts them jammed into their mouth and against their nose evert time they are kissed. I wouldn't mind hi mustache if he wore it on his heel, but no married niun ha cot a rwht to y-r .pur under his vae.'. Blie said this with considerable fueling. Jf - "But we have always heard that a mus tache was an element iu kissing to be de sired rather than avoided by your sex." "I don't know anything about that, but I do know that in this case it is a nuisance Why, it's just like kissing a second-hand curry-comb to kiss John. A paper of pins is as a uoor-kuol to that muatacue ol his." And Mrs. Crim cried softly. We saw hoar it was. Mr. Criiu in his ambition to raise a mustache had shaved early and often, aud had got a crop of stubble that must prove agonizing to a sensitive nature. Still, we could not pre sent a remedy, and the uufortunate lady took her departure, well ui:;h crushed beneath her load. And now on this night of the festival John lip waa bare aud Mrs. Crim was radiant. We were very much gratified. aud somewhat surprised, aud consider ably curious. Pretty soon Airs. Lnui I'uuiid her way to us. "Ain't you astouished?" she asked. "We are visibly affected," we aaid; "but how did it come alfouU" She told us. There were several "You must know," aud much gapping, and many nods, and expressive glances in the narrative, but simplified Uowu it was just this. She thought aud thought for iluys witli all Her luiiilit on the sui-lect. Pleadings, expostulations aud even threats effected nothing. Some plan must be devised which should briug him to his seuaes, or force him to cut off the hate ful thing without bis seusc. One wlrnle mouth she wi est led with this problem before receiving light. Tlie olau she hit upon waa simple but ef- lective. She resolved to take to lied with her at niiilit a pair of scissors, and when ner buabaud fell asleep she would gore that mustache so it would have to be takeu off, or be become a laughing stock to the populace. "But that was (even year ago. Did you (five up the idea.uutil nowi" we asked. V "Oh, no, I never gave it up," Said ihe, fluslnmr stiirlitry. then noticing our puzzled expression, she added, desperately I I kept getting asleep first." 'Oil!" we ejaculated. "Yes," she continued, with a sigh. "I couldn't help it. Every night I took the scissor to ld with me, ami every mgnl t lay as still as a mouse for him to go to sleep, and next thing I'd know, it was morning, and tlie scissor was under toe pillow, and the mustache under his nose. Bat last night he bad a bad cold, and went to bed early, and mother gave him a big bowl of hop tea, and when I went to bed he waa asleep. And thea," said she, with a burst of enthusiasm, "I fixed him. He was a spectacle, you can bet, this morning, and pretty mad, too; hut lie snaven. aud now a kiss is some thing like living." Just think of it, dear reader. This woman persistently, faithfully following up for seven years a plan to improve the flavor of a kiss. Is there anything in all modern history to compare with this no ble devotion, with this self-sacrificing spirit. Night after night for seven long and weary years this woman took her scissors to her bed, and night after night for all that time she lay there patiently wstchinif, patiently waiting, and dcsirer- stely striving to keep the "sticks" out of her eye. It is a srand lesson in patience, perse' verance and faithfulness, to all of us. DiinbuTf fteiei. The Combative Goshawk. Dr. Wood, in the American A'tlunUitt, tell the fol lowing stories: "Our common goshawk is the most darluir and ventursoiue of any of our diurnal birds of prey. A farmer who resides a few mile from my otnee, wishing to periictuate the ni l New Eng land custom of having a chicken pie for Thanksgiving dinner, caught some fowls, took them to a log, severed tho neck ol one and threw it down beside him. Iu an instant a goshawk seized a struggling fowl, and firing on some ten rials, alighted and commenced devouring his prey. The iHildneia of the attack so astonished the farmer that hn looked on with blank amazement. Recovering from his stir plisfl he hastened into the house and brought out his gun, which secured him Ik it ti the hawk and the fowl. Another instance of still greater daring occurred near a dwelllnir house; the door Ixdnu open the hen flew Inside; the hawk fol lowed aud seized her In the room ocrti pied by an idd gentleman and his daugh ter. The old mu hastened to thn rescue and struck the hawk with a cane before it released it grssti. The daughter caught the hawk salt attempted to fly out of the door, and killed It.
