Joseph Bellanger LZnrdered His House Burned -Mr. Tubei's Barn Burned. Last Thursday morning about 2 o'clock Mr. Tuber's barn and the cabin of Joseph Bellanger near Tay lor's Ferry on the Tualatin were set on fire by unknown parties and burned up. Bellanger was a French man and was living alone. It is re ported that he had withdrawn 500 from a bank in Portland ior which it is thoughthe was murdered and robbed, and that the robbers burned his bouse and Mr. Tuber's barn to mislead the authorities. Mr. Tuber loses quite heavily by the burning of his barn, which was a largo building filled with grain, provender and farming tmplements and machinery. Hero is what the Oreijonian of Monday says which ex plains the strange disappearance of Bellanger; The search which Las been instituted for the the missing l'it uchuiau, Joseph Uelian ger, whose cabin was destroyed by tiro last Thursday, near Taylor's ferry, has lt d to the discovery of traces which confirm thu g. nerally entertained impression that the man was murdered. Persons who have re cently come from Taylor's ff-rry state that the tracks of two or three men have bet n discovered leading to the Frenchman's cab in. After following the tracks for some distance a t.lail was found presenting the appearance of some heavy body having been dragged along the ground. Some tlis tane away from the cabin a hat was picked up, which was identitit d as belonging to bellanger. The hat had traces of blood. Soon after the hat was found the trail changed into a number of horses' tracks. From where Ballanger's cabin stood to the Tualatin river is only about one mile and a half, and the supposition is that the French man was murdered in his cabin, which w;;s burned to obliterate the traces of the blood. and that the body was dragged some dis tance, then pla-eii on horse-hack ami con veyed to the river and thrown into tin stream. All efforts thus far ma do to find the body have proved unsuccessful. Beaverton Items: April 17th, 1870. This District hns employed Miss Jennie Kindt to teach School. The school will begin the first of May. Miss C. A. Marsh who taught in this District last summer and win ter will teach the young idea how to shoot at the lieedviilo school i-ouse this summer. An article appeared a short time since in the Independent in relation to a proposed diviiou of the county. That is to cut ol'f a slice of the east part of Washington county and at tach it to Multnomah. The conclu sion arrived at in that artielo seemed to bo that it would not be to the in terest of the people in this, to be itttu'bcil to 3IuItnornuIi countw e understand that the proposed. propo division is being generally dis cussed and that there uro two or three petitions in circulation to that effect. One of the principal reasons that would influence the people of Beaverton and vicinity to desiro to become annexed to Multnomah Co. would be that they might thereby have better roads, as that countv is abundantly able to make them. And this matter ef iruproving our roads is one in which not only this section is interested but also a large portion of tho county. It would be, we think, a reasonable esti mate to say that three fifths of the t-iavel of Washington county in to Portland passes over tho Canyon road, which is by far the worst road leading into the city, and which in the winter season is nearly impass ible on account of mud holes ami steep grades. The county Board made a good improvement last year at the Pointer Hill on -his road. Let a wise and liberal policy be pursued by Washington county in making and improving the public highwa3s and we don't think the people living near tho border line will bo very auxious to "split tho blanket." W. A Boy. Mr. Garrison met George Mor row the other day and Gecrge said that there was an emigrant at his house. Garrison asked him what it was, and Geo'ge replied very fer vently, "Thank God! it is a boy tin' time." It is feared that George will not bo able to put in his spring crop this year. Good Supervisor. C. P. Crandall makes a first-class read supervisor. Duriug his admin istration trees have been cut down, stumps and roots grubbed up, logs and brush cleared away, and the road ditched, making a great change in the appearance and con dition of that formerly rough and mien- piece of road this sideof Cor nelius. Bitten By a Dog. Mr. D. T. Phillips of Cornelius undertook to punisn his dog last week and the canine got the best of the row,1 biting Mr. Phillips wrist so severely that he had to come to Hillsboro and get Dr. Bailey to dress the wound. Forest Grove liems: The Ladies Sewing Circle or Mite Society met at Prof. Condon's resi dence Tuesday evening of last week where a genial time was enjoyed. There was a social hop at Mr. Leabo's house last Friday evening aud it was a(v)bupper. Mr. Barret who lives on Gales creek has just returned from a trip to Y. T. about 20 miles north of Vancouver. lie reports some immi grants up there who are very poor. They took up homesteads but the big timber and rocks dishearten them. The men aro compelled to go 100 miles Jaway to work for provisions for their families. Mr. Barrett saj-s our pooiest hill land here is bettei than any of tho land up there. A number of those immigrants intend to -come here as soon as they can get away. Mr. Ilaydcn sold his place of 100 acres on Lousignot'a lake to an immigrant from Missouri for $2, 000. A a ear ago it could have been bought for $1,500. Mr. Hudson of this place has bought the property adjoining his blacksmith shop on the west for Prof. Condon will lecture at the Cong. eh. next Friday evening for the benefit of the Mite Society. Mr. V"iliams of Xehalem has jut arrived. lie reports about two feet of snow on the mountains. He has laid in a sunplv of bacon. Some one asked him if he thought he picture of Cornelius on his last visit could get back there with such a j hero. It is probably due to the nat Ioa I. lie replied that tho bacon he j oral depression of "spirits" consu lt was sfromr enough to take him ! enient on these little bibacious indul- a good deal farther. Al. Horner and Bob Scott shot and wounded two v.olves near Mr. Buxton's farm and having no dogs the wolves made their escape, leav ing traces of blood; but they killed a line doer which paid them for their t bio. One of our immi 'rants took din- ner at an Astoria hotel lately and ! was sc rvi-d with a dish of ox-tail soup and the soup being rather thin he complained to the waiter abjut it, when the latter explained that the soup was made out of a bob tail ox which, might account for it. Bill Jackson of your town and Geo. Grant arrived yesterday from Scappoose. Oil the mountain Bill was watch im for covotes thinkinqr to get v0 for a wolf scalp, when hearing a noise in the brush lie .1. .... fi.. . , . , . .... funud his handkerchief somcw hat. Bill said, "D un the skunk!' The prosp -ct for fhowers is excellent. Jerome Porter has sold l. of the '3-year old colts tiuit he brought down from Ka-.t of the -Mountains at an averago price of per head. H. C. Lieser and wife returned from Albany and have gone to Union Point where Mr. Lieser will teach a term oi school. Prof. Condon and Mrs. Spiller will leave here at the close of the school. They have accepted posi tions offered by the State University. The Independent primary last Saturday was a failure owing to the non-arrival of the upper Xch alem delegation. The bar was a little too rough to cross that day. Toots. Diilcy Items: April 21, 1S70. School began to-day with 5- scholars in attendance, with Mr. Tyson as teacher, for a term of three months. A fish trap was put in at Parson s mill last week which caught a few trout ami from oOO to 500 suckers and chubs in one night. In my last I stated that Mr. Welch was elected director and (ieo. Hines clerk, but vou had it just the reverse(It was your mistake, friend "K. Y..Z." E..) The roads in Scoggiris and Pat ton's valleys are almost impassible in places. J. P. Chmty has sold his farm of ICO acres to W. (J. Scoggin for $S0. Mr. P. proposes to sell all his stock etc, also. Alonz Markham fed his horse too much wheat at;d foundered it, so the horse gets a rest for a week or so. The cattle aro leaning against the fences waiting for the grass to grow. We don't havo much grass in these parts as yet. The farmers are busy plowing and sowing between showers, whenever they get a chance. K. Y. Z. Dd You Take It? Breathes there a man with soul so dead, "Who never to himself hath saiil, I will a family paper ta!ie. Both for ray own and children's sake? T. Jack Powers, our lively wood dealer, is buying fir-pitch in large piantitie?. Saturday night, Stoughton and Henderson, tho rival hack drivers of the Grove, brought down two or three runners apiece, and when the train arrived they made a rush for the passenjairs. Stoughton cap tured tho larger number and drove I ,. If I Oil ll'lj Will the scandal-monger who does tho 'small talk" in Cornelius and vicinity give the community a shoit rest? There is always a "black sheep"-in every community, and it is a shame that a person who makes pretention.; to respectability should indulge in the wholesale scandal of those who aro acknowledged to be respectable. A Tillamooker who had been loaf ing about town for some time, with out any visible means of support, thought to show his appreciation of gratuitous board to the family with which he was staying, by appropria ting lire-wood on which he had no valid claim. But when tho polite owner o At red to introduce him to Squire Do Letts, ho "pulled up stakes and lied." "Toots", the gifted correspondent at the Grovo, draws a melancholy genees, and then again, it isn't very consoling to a fellow when he has to leave his own town to try to get a pair of overalls on "tick." ChaIes while going home from the Golden Bule the other night ot thoroughly drenched with rain. After getting home, he struggled for half an hour to get outside of his pantaloons, and finally succeeded after some swearing and a good deal of sweating and placed them on a chair before the lira to dry. The next morning he gotup and found one leg of his breeches missing and the other past all usefulness. That flat tened his plans for going to see his "pullback" that day. Grimes. Mrs. Buford has just opened a new stock of millinerv goods. Her shop windows present a very fine appearance. S. Hughes has just received one of Storm's patent cultivators which has every appearance of being' just the thing for a -thorough cultiva tion of the seil. Farmers are intro ducing tho cultivator for tho prepa ration of fall and winter plowed lands, thereby saving one half of the work usually applied in tho old way of plow ing. Will it work? Let us hear from some of the farmers on this point. Mrs. M. W. McCreedy, late P. M. at the Grove, paid us a flying visit Saturday last. Farm work hasleen seriously in terrupted by tho continued rains. Snow has almost entirley dissap peared from the mountains; we may now look for good weather.
