The trustees of the Pacific Univer
sity and Tualatin Academy met at
Portland last week. Prof. Condon
was appointed Prof, of Natural His
tory and Prof . , Collier transferred to
the chair of Mathematics
President Marsh has decided to go
East with a view to obtain, if pos
sible, additional funds. Prof. Con
don's appointment seems to necessi
tate additional endowments, and the
need of new buildings is apparent.
We hope the President will succeed
in his public-spirited enterprise and
thus give the Institution a new start
on the road to prosperity. He has a
host of friends in the East who have
already subscribed liberally to the
Institution on his personal influence
and we doubt not but that they will
put their hands down into their pock
ets again when they learn that it is
necessary. He has already procured
n fund of 70,000 for thisinstitution,
which is probably double the endow
ment of any other college in ihe
State, and has the promise of $50,000 j

The Grove owes its present pros

institutions. Tho College and
Academy havo made it. Not ecu
trail' located, though a beautifal
site it would have been a village now
of two dozen families without these
institutions. And in all works of
generosity the Doctor has been most
unselfish and generous. When it
comes to private or public benefactions
although poorer than many men in
the Grove he subscribes more liber
ally than any. But this unselfish
ness and self-sacriticing spiiit is ex
emplified raostia that he unspent the
best years of his life in this wilder
ness while his talents could com

plans for the advancement of the In
stitution and education in this State

ton vs Beecher scandal Buit could
not agree, standing nin for Beecher
and three for Tilton and were dis
charged. The legal status of the
case is that Tilton failed to substan
tiate his charge of adulter against
Mr. Beecher. It is thought that
Tilton will not demand another
trial.

year ago an old gentleman by the
name of A. Eaughlin who lives up
on Wapato lake under the delusion
that the West-side It. It. Co. would
receive freight from one man as well
as another's boarded hands and paid
them 75 cents per cord and gave
1.00 a cord for hauling to the ela
tion at Gaston, where he piled his
wood. by the track for shipment. But
the Company refused to carry it for
him. Other men offered to buy it if
they could ship it by car but they
were always told that tho Cordwood
Company must own the wood before
the train would take it on. Tho old
man after waiting one year was forced
from fin.mcioi embarrassment to sell
the .wood, whicli wai oak, at $2.00 a
cord to one of tho Company's un-
derstrappers. ;nd this is only one :
the Company along the entire route.
